I'm not exactly sure how they're going to manage this - I was under the impression that the fundamental optics of Blu-ray and HD DVD are quite different. Still, good luck to 'em!

    Samsung rules. :)

"Play nice, or we'll make you share the market and neither of you will have a 'dominating format' to stand on." Though this is a little bit Salomon-esque...two warring parents, so we cut the market in half and the consumers end up footing the bill because they have to pay for two technologies instead of one.

"No, I love the market too much to see it divided. I relinquish my format!"
"Only the one true format would be willing to make such a sacrifice! I dub thee the new movie format!"
    "Oh snap!"

I'm glad they've made the first move with this, I suspect other companies will follow and the only ones left behind will be the two camps, at which point the movie companies won't be able to wait any longer and will pick one on their behalf. If the big distributors all chose to use HD at once, it won't even matter what the advantages of one vs. the other are, since all the media will be in one format.

They will use two different laser one for each media maybe even 4 to support CDs and current DVDs.

If it supports all optical media to date, I'll be happy. That said, I'll be avoiding the new formats for as long as possible (except for big removable storage in my PC) for quite a number of reasons. But realistically, I'd MUCH MUCH rather see a unified format or have one die out very early.

I think I'd rather see Samsung put out a BD-only player and have one studio put out some content on that sooner rather than later and effectively snuff out HDDVD (or the other way around, but I'd take 25GB disks over 15GB ones any day), because I figure in this day and age, once one is out there the other doesn't stand a chance. Not quite like DVD+R/DVD-R, as they're, from what I can tell, effectively the same thing save a vertical line.

I'm really NOT happy at all with the way tech is moving forward. It's all well and good on paper, then they try and implement it and screw over the consumer yet again. Content protection of sorts being my #1 concern, but format wars taking an easy second.

The laser is the same for blu-ray and hd-dvd - the only (major) difference is the disk. (Up to 8 layers, 25gb per layer)

The blu-ray folks want new laser AND new media. (Thinner clear layer - allows for more layers.)
The hd-dvd folks want to use the new laser on existing DVD media to save money. Thick clear layer and probably only 2 layers. (Probably only 2 layers, but there has been talk of the possibility of more, 15gb per layer.)

To play both hd-dvd and blu-ray all you would really need is to pay 2 license fees instead of one. You would need another laser to read DVDs and yet another laser to read CDs.

Oh, and - WAY TO GO SAMSUNG!!

This whole thing is ridiculous. In a way, I would be glad if no-one made a dual-format player because then one of them would die out much more quickly. Look at the current situation with DVD+R and DVD-R - it's a complete farce. Obviously though, that's not very good business, and credit to Samsung for announcing such a product already.

I guess I'll just have to hope that one gets trodden all over by the other, because otherwise we'll have a lot of bemused consumers out there and higher prices all round.

it odesnt matter if they release it... as no company will risk shipping a piece of media unless the entire industry is on board.
