My F3 2TB is pretty loud in a NAS box; but I can't tell the difference between the F3 and F1 in my desktop.
I got Antec 900 case, no rubber mounts though. Ill try to move HDD around and see what happens. Putting two SAMSUNG f3 in raid0 all in one bay will create more vibration& noise? Should I separate them by putting one in each bay, will that reduce the noise level?
try running them outside the case for a short time first to see if it really is the cause of the noise
Lots of ways to dampen hard drive noise, just hit google with "HDD noise dampening" and enjoy yourself. To put th story short, mounting the drive with rubber bands should be the most efficient way. Also, lol at all of you people with completely silent mechanical hard drives. No such thing exists.
My loudest drive is a Hitachi Deskstar, I think. It grinds a little when operating. Not in a "I'm a bout to die" way, it's just always done it. It's my boot drive, too, so if I don't have my fans up it gets a bit grating.
Mines silent too, my old raptor drive was v.noisey. loadest thing in my setup is the HDD, but only when its active, and even then i would class it as 'Inaudible' especially being a HTPC its a cracking HDD. Does it make the noises when outside case just on Sata cables? Alex.
SNAP, I've got a Samsung F3 in the same case as above and mines silent as well, sounds like you potentially have a faulty drive? Or more realistically the case you have it in probably doesn't drown out the sound very well, I've known many cheap(er) cases emit a LOT of sound that higher priced/quality cases don't.
I've just bought a 3rd Samsung HD103SJ to replace one of the 2 HD103SJs that failed in my RAID0 last week, I placed it in the same mount the first drive was at previously (rubber mounted screws as well) and it's adding a lot of humming vibration to my desk which is very uncomfortable now. I think I have one of the noisy ones as it's probably newer/manufactured elsewhere or something that my last 2 HD103SJs wasn't affected with. I'm waiting on Seagate RMA's process to get a replacement drive as they've bought out Samsung, was planning on ebaying the RMA'ed drive as New but might end up using it instead if it's any quieter :/
