I had a F1 a year or so ago and a part of the pcb inside, went pop with a big puff of smoke. I still have it in my room collecting dust. Typical that it run out of warrenty when it decided to die. So i went out and bought 2 ssds to cheer myself up

Out of those 10, no RMAs and no drives that died. Unlike my WD drives that always seem to die because of their controller boards
2x samsung sp2004c spinpoint p series 2x samsung hd103si spinpoint f2 ecogreen series all of which are currently in use in file server, which see some pretty good use. no issues with samsung drives, or my western digitals, or my hitachis... lots of failed seagates.
1 F3 500GB about a year 1 F4 2TB about 1 month 1 F3 1TB about a week, but it isn't in a machine yet. No failures on any of them.
I have had a 1tb F3 for a few months and although I have never had any trouble with it, it does seem to make strange noises which has me worried.
The problem with this are people are for more likely to post if they've had a problem so you can't get a representative result. Plus people on this forum probably give hard drive far more work than most people.
Normally I would agree, but counting the hdds posted we have a total of 133 hdds with 15 failures making a fail rate of roughly 11.3%. If you take out the one post where the guy had 8 out of 10 fail then you have 123 hdds with 5 failed making for a 4.1% fail rate. Not too bad considering the sample size.
500GB Spinpoint failed 2 weeks ago. Strange though because it seemed to be electronics. i.e. as soon as I switched the computer on something tripped out the whole system. Process of elimination identified the HDD. 2 Years old. First time I've ever had an HDD failure.
My 250GB Spinpoint hasn't died yet but it sounds I had tried to change gear in a car without any clutch, it grates and makes harsh noises when first turned.
