I'm reasonably technical on some subjects but others I don't have much of a clue, networks being one of them. I'm stumped with the FTP settings on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S where there's an option to add 'FTP' in the Samsung 'My Files' app. I'm assuming, maybe incorrectly, that this will allow me to access files on whatever shared drive I specify on my desktop PC. I set it up with a Name e.g. MyDesktopPC, my desktop IP address (192.168.1.64 or with the server details to directly access the shared drive e.g. 192.168.1.64/d_mydesktoppc), the port automatically defaults to 21, I can choose either 'Passive' or 'Active' mode (either way fails), enter my username and password then click done I get 'connection error occurred'. If I use the same settings in the ES File Explorer app on the Samsung I connect OK but in that case I only need to enter the Server IP address, username and password so I assume that the app defaults in some of the settings that the Samsung app asks for. I expected this to be easy so why doesn't it work? I've rebooted both the PC and Tablet after entering the settings.
I did think about that although I don't have a clue what to change but other file managers I've used have been able drill down into the network without a problem using the same login credentials. If I was starting from scratch I could appreciate having to tweak stuff but can't work out why I have to do it just for the Samsung app.
Shared Drives on Windows don't use FTP so you will not be able to connect this way. You will need to run a FTP Server on your Desktop to be able to connect with an FTP Client, what OS it it running?
That would explain it, ES File Explorer must use a different protocol to connect. I'm running Windows 7, what do you recommend? Edit: I've looked at Windows IIS and FileZilla and understood neither. I think I'll look for a replacement for ES File Manager rather than try to configure the Samsung app. I've just found that ES File manager uses the SMB protocol, not FTP.
