This will be my first build and would appreciate some input from people with more experience in these things. As the tittle says, I'll be using the rig mainly for gaming and surfing in teh webs. Here's a list of the parts I'm currently leaning on, I'm from Finland and the pricing of the parts in amazon is around the same as it is in here, so used the site as reference: Budget: 1200£/1400€ Doesn't mean i want to spend all of it tho. Monitor resolution: 1920x1080 Will you be overclocking: yes Case - Coolermaster HAF 922 http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128533&pf_rd_i=468294 I really like the design of this case, also read some great reviews of it. Power Supply - Corsair HX 750W http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMP...47IA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295021677&sr=1-1 Most likely getting a second GPU later on and going crossfire, hence the 750W CPU - Intel Core i5 2500k CPU cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus Cpu fan http://www.amazon.co.uk/COOLER-MAST...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1295022521&sr=8-2 Motherboard - Asus P8P67 Pro http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-Chipse..._1_cc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295022067&sr=1-1-catcorr GPU - Sapphire Ati Radeon HD 6950 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-69...YJFI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295021884&sr=1-1 Will be getting another one of these later on. RAM - G.skill Ripjaws-X http://www.silentrig.com/product/58...-pc3-10667u-cl7-7-7-21-ddr3-1333-sandy-bridge 8gb an overkill? I know the X series is mostly just a marketing ploy, but they've gotten some nice reviews so far. HDD - Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB OS - Win 7 Home Premium DVD-RW - http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronic...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1295022695&sr=1-1 -The things I'm mainly unsure about are the memory and the PSU, also might be going with either the HAF X case or HAF 932. - Will most likely be getting a SSD later on. So, anything you guys would suggest changing?
Welcome! The RipjawsX are hand tested on at least one SB motherboard for compatibility - older Ripjaws are 1156, but yea, it's also about branding The RipX heatsinks are short enough to fit under the coolers I've tried so far too and I'd defo go for an 8GB kit. Check our memory performance on SB article here: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/memory/2011/01/11/the-best-memory-for-sandy-bridge/1. If you want I can ask G.Skill where to buy their stuff in the UK? Only thing I can think of is the SSD - do you want to go to the effort of installing the OS now, then having to reinstall later? Although, new, faster ones are due soon... Maybe upgrade the CPU cooler - you've got all that graphics grunt but can't drop another £10 on a a TT Frio? The Titan Fenrir doesn't fit on the ASUS board unless you remove one of the heatsinks - it's a Titan issue because their bracket overshoots the Intel 'keep out' area for the LGA1155 socket. I'd opt for 932 over X. I've got the X now and it's massive, almost grotesque, whereas I miss my old 932 The only downside is that it's not black inside and the X has wheels. Just wondering, why are you getting everything from Amazon?
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/memory/2011/01/11/the-best-memory-for-sandy-bridge/11 4gb actually offers better performance than 16gb so save you £ for more GPU. Amazon isn't the place to buy tech parts. Shop around and you could easily shave £100 off. And unless you really like the look of that case save some £ and get this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/antec-300-three-hundred-black-midi-tower-ultimate-gaming-case-w-o-psu
For a site to compile links/lists try http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ nice and easy to navigate and use basket.
For putting a cart together I am a big fan of Scans website. I would only get 4gb RAM personally. If ever more was needed at that point it would probably be even cheaper to buy
personally i would get as much ram as you can, especially with 64bit windows, ask bindi. the more memory you have, the more programs you can run at once.
I would definitely buy 8GB of memory, it's the new standard and we'll only be using more going forward.
I would be looking a 8gb for sure. I have that chip and board and it preforms great so far. It's curentally at 4.3ghz but i will bump it up more tonight when i get time. For the sake of 10-20 pounds i would get something like the h50 or the Thermaltake frio as said above. Although the 2500k is a very cool running chip. The 560GTX is due out in about a week or so, It might be worth holding out for. The worst it an do is drive the price of the 6950 down a little.
It's unlocked already i think. Also you don't get access to the market place untill you have 75 posts.
Have things changed that much in the last couple months? Last I saw games had no use of anymore than 4gb RAM and it didn't seem like that would change for a while. Kinda like howthe biggest benefit of a Quad core CPU for gaming is actually the addition of the third core rather than the 4th in many cases (hence the RANA 450 being an awesome bargain CPU)
Kudos to Asteldian for asking the exact same question as I wanted to. For a gaming rig, is 8Gb a luxury or necessity? I know its well worth if for image editing etc, but if (like me) you're just looking to maximise gaming potential does 4Gb not carry the can, performance wise?
If you only ever do one thing at once on your PC, sure, but then you might as well buy a dual core too. I run out of 4GB of memory regularly: open 10x 10MP images in Photoshop and that 1.6GB of free memory goes poof. It's actually pissing me off because I've two dead memory slots as well If he's buying as an investment because he needs memory, 8GB is the way to go: he's got a £1200 budget and the price difference is pretty small. If you're just thinking of a 4GB-8GB upgrade we would always suggest "ask yourself why do you really need it"?
