    Hey guys

Wandering what differences there are between these two HD5850 cards from Sapphire? From what I can see the Toxic is slightly more expensive and has a different fan, but I'm probably missing something.

Anyone know if the differences are noticeable?

I hear a lot of people recommending the Vapor-X card however my vendor currently only has the Toxic cards in stock, but I don't mind waiting out if it's worth it for the Vapor-X

    Thanks in advance guys

someone confirm this but isnt the Vapor-X the card with better quieter cooler, but not pre-overclocked.

The toxic is pre-overclocked but uses a rather noisy less effective cooler.

As far as I know, the main difference is that Toxic has a tad higher factory overclock than Vapor-X, which in most cases has next to no impact on performance.

Cooler should be basicly the same in both cards, though I'm not 100% sure, someone else can probably confirm this.

Edit:// Pretty sure there there's no difference in coolers:

So, in essence you're paying extra money for a card which has no physical difference, but rather has higher clock speeds. And since they're pre-overclocks they aren't particularly extreme ones, with a bit of tinkering you can easily exceed them.
I say get the normal Vapor-X card and overclock it yourself if you need to.

The Toxic is so close in price to the 5870, that you may as well buy a 5870.

    Thanks everyone for the input

There is only £14 difference between the two cards yet the more expensive Toxic is in stock, so might as well go for that one

Ph4ZeD : The vapor-X 5870 is £120 more expensive then the Toxic from Amazon, and the Toxic 5850 is only £16 more then the Vapor-X 5850, perhaps it's a different story at other retailers?

The Sapphire 5850 Toxic is £280 on Amazon, and the 5870 can be bought for £300 - £310 on most etailers.

Ph4ZeD also means a normal 5870, not a Vapor-X one. Though not overclocked, it will perform better than any Toxic or Vapor 5850.

My own two cents says never buy a card when special features unless it's already the best option. Stock 5870 will make you happier than a special 5850.

Well the reality is that card makers make a very juicy margin on the pre-overclocked models because they offer very little extra performance for lots of extra money. Thats why the only real reason to buy overclocked models is if your buying the top card available - below that, its always worth putting the extra money toward the next card up in the range.

I concur, go for a 5870, unless the 5850 Vapor-X suddenly becomes suddenly cheaper of course.

i hate to say it but the vapor-x HD5870 was 330 quid from overclockers not long ago - i personally would wait for another sale like that

The only reason I could see getting the 5850 Vapor-X over a 5870 is the lower temps and noise.

So let me see if I can sum up the feedback and get this right.

Considering the following prices from Amazon.co.uk you guys suggest getting the standard HD5870 for £50 more then the HD5850 Vapor-X?

The extra stretch in price might be a bit too far for me I feel

If the price stretch is too much then that leaves the HD5850 Toxic/Vapor-X and seen as the Vapor-X is out of stock, it might be worth the extra £12 to ensure that I will get this card within the next couple of months

Sadly I am locked into purchasing from amazon.co.uk directly as they are the only online retailer I know of that handle HM Forces VAT Refunds :/

the sapphire HD5870 (the 2nd one down) has been out of stock for months - i dont think they ever sold any at that price.

Vapor x is a must for most on high end graphics solutions

noise is a big problem. I know my 5850 vapor x only cost £210 back last November

but prices have gone up since then

Normal 5870 isn't noisy under load if your using head set you won't here it or some decent speakers .
