The sad thing is that not a lot of the people who do the sentencing and things in cases such as these are as clued up as most of the IT community on what has actually gone on. I am all for impartial judging, after all it is the very foundation of a fair system but often a judge will be so impartial that they start to doubt how serious certain things are.

I, thankfully, escaped the sasser worm but I do know a couple of people who had it, in fact I had to reinstall thier system for them, which resulted in the loss of a lot of stuff they had spent time getting a hold of.

For them this sentence will seem like a kick in the teeth and I can fully understand how they feel on it, I never got paid for my help hehe

Wow. That kind of sucks. Worst is if their criminal records function like they do over here. When you're tried as a minor, your record gets sealed at age 18. So this has been tried and closed, and the only person who would ever see it is the government.

I personally don't think this guy should have had any punishment besides community service. He exploited a Microsoft security hole, if he didn't exploit...the results could have been worse in the future etc. Plus, it's the companies/peoples responsibilities to keep ahead in security. None of my computers got hit with Sasser and they were on 24/7. My dad's computer got hit immediately because he wasn't on a router.

    Bitter much?

    "What are you in for?"
    "Writing a computer virus. You?"
"Robbing a bank and killing 3 cops on the way out."
"... You're going to trade me for cigarettes, aren't you?"
    "You wish! Bend over."
    " :eeek: "

suspended means if he does anything like this in the next 21 months then he will go to prison, to be honest i think he should be sent to prison, ok he didnt kill anyone, but how many people sufferd because of his sad hobby of coding a virus.. i seriously dont get ppl that do this kinda thing  but they must be pritty sad to get any joy out of it, i'd like to see him punished quite severly i mean any other crime that effected that many ppl & businesses u'd be looking at a long time behind bars :miffed:

I don't think the punishment fits the crime... On the other hand I really don't care if he goes to prison or not... instead, how about taking away any money he ever gets and using that to pay back all the individuals and companies for the time, effort and money they had to spend to clean up his "little prank".

for the record i never had a machine un-patched. I did once get one infected in the time it took to apply the patch (was on a fully routed ip in the 195.137 range).

    But John, no, no, no.

He did not discover this flaw.

The flaw had been well documented (like a howto for programmers really).

The patch had been sugested as critical, and ne one with a braincell had patched.

This patch coursed mayhem to the internet. He should NEVER be allowed back on, at his age, he should know better.

"oh but it showed people they needed to patch" that wasn't the idea, if you want to do that, theres no need to make their PC re-start (due to killing RPC), a message that stays on their screen saying "you've been compramised" is enough.

Your dad's computer got hit because he wasn't on a router, hate to mention, i garentee you he was, thats how the net works. You didn't get them i hope because you'd patched. A firewall/limited port mappings, is often used to hide a multitude of sins, this is very very bad and should never be used to promote security.

punishment fits the crime perfectly, a minor did a bad thing but nothing horrible like killing, and now hes getting the punishment a teenager should. hope the record goes away at 18 too so it doesnt mar up the rest of his life for one stupid mistake.

Even if he had a record it wouldn't mar him for life! The only place it would impact him is in the IT industry. A department store doesn't care if you wrote a virus...

However that being said, I very disappointed. I was really hoping they would make an example of this kid. However hope is not lost yet... There is still civil court. I would like to see a mass suit brought against this kid and or his parents. For all the damages he caused!

    More info via Reuters.

Seems he confessed fully. Probably the reason he got off with such a light sentence.

    The bit I like is:

I don't think he'll be taking much home after he gets his "nice cushy job".

Wow, this guy has my respects,

he did'nt simply wrote 1 successful virus, but 2. This guy is quite lucky for the sentence that he got, but also, It's almost sure that when he'll get out, that he'll have a job, that you can be sure of. :D

Surely there's more productive things you can put your time to than writing viruses. He should be respected about as much as an annoying script kiddy. Of whom, all need to be shot.

If you find a hole, let the original writers know so they can patch it.

please, for the sake of future generations, go stick a power drill, up your genitals and engage the power.

    Thanks.
