    As well as windows updates?
Try enabling the internet connection firewall for all internet connections.

It plants backups of itself in the System32 folder. They should be right at the top of the list. weird stuff like 12232134, 342255. If you open the folder and it's empty, that's them -DELETE.

Edit: Try disconnecting from the internet completly(pull the cable). It seems not to shutdown if you do that. then run your tools. Good Luck.

Also dont forget the ever popular shutdown -a in the run menu. Stops it from shutting down. Also you cant do a manual start> shutdown as it removes the shutdown option from the menu. But will save you from the 60 sec shutdown and you will be able to surf

    YAY... I already have it...
Mmmmmm.... Windows update site tastes nice...
I noticed that when the virus was running in memory, I could not get to windows update site. May have just been a coincidence though. I got a similar error to when you have the date+time set incorrectly.

Does anybody else think it was lucky that this virus/worm did'nt have a worse payload?, considering a lot of people seemed to be unprotected.

yup. very much so. It could have done a LOT more damage very easily. Them virus writers must have some moral I guess. If I where to write a virus, I would go totally hardcore. Use every method of distrobution I could code into a file, and do all kindsa stuff to make it hidden as much as possible, and make it spread a lot slower, as to not bog down the computer. Also, maybe find a way of getting around the shutdown screen. Should do a lot better there. Most users of win xp reboot their machines frequently enough.
but meh... I'll leave the virus writers to write their code, and I shall continue to remove it for 40 bucks and hour.

Heheh, I wouldn't make it do too much damage. TBO, I would be, "laughing my ass off" seeing it getting the amount of publicity its getting now. Plus, if the coder was a real M$ hater then he could add that to his/her "why Windows sucks" pile.

I havn't done a Windows Update since I installed Windows XP. No problems for me.

i'd make it do something funny like

    *click on 'shutdown this pc'

    message box
"are you sure you want to do that?"
    with 3 buttons saying
Email a friend/ask all the people with unauthorised acess to you machine/and 010

I think they do it because ms doesn't have the heading of every error message say, "Oh, I'm sorry. But we SUCK!!!"
