With the mini show season coming up and my sense of direction rivalling that of Captain Slow's I thought I'd look into purchasing a Satellite Navigation system.

I, ideally, don't want to spend too much money but want something that will get me from A to B all around the country.

Anyone got any recommendations or suggestions feel free.
I was looking at Tom Toms and the like but honestly know nothing about them.

ninja edit: just so you know, my car doesn't have a 12v so it would need to be battery powered, not externally.

Lots of votes for Garmin Quest. it's not touch screen or anything too fanciful, but is well thought out functionally, and can do some good stuff with the pc software that comes with it.

Main point is the battery life - I can't tell you what the exact operation time is, but I've had mine going ~10 hours on a charge, it lasted 5 days on/off when we were walking through exmoor (durable enough for that too!). I've done Reading > Blackburn > Reading on a single charge too.

The dead cheap 'myguides' and the like can have the TomTom software forced onto them, migh tbe worth a look - and out of interest - what car do you have that has no 12v?

A 25 year old Mini (and another one that's only 20 years old)
I can put in a 12v but I need to be bothered to do so.

I'll look into the Myguides and the Quest.

    Cheers both.

Do you already have an iPhone or iPod touch? If so, you could just get a satnav cradle and/or one of the various satnav apps..

I've got tomtom on my Win mo phone (both of them, HTC touch pro 2 and MDA compact 3)

    Works fine.

Can be done cheap if you look around.

My tomtom's battery only lasts about 4hours which isn't anything amazing, I would look for one with a good battery life, other than that it works just fine.
