with all the pilfering going on from skips we should ahve a sticky (hint hint moderators ) on the skips we use & what we have salaved from them, heck we could probably keep this thing going for months with a new post of slavage everyday i will start 1 unkown brand micro ATX mainboard, model number P6SET-ML slot 1 & socket 370 salvaged from Dewsbury college tech departments skip by the automotive department your turns
OT: If this thread takes off I'm sure it'll make the popular thread sticky... no need for a sticky of its own nowww salveraged from a skip? Nope I'm rubbish (boom boom), never got nothing r.
that was a really bad joke cheesie but then agian you did live near me so i recon you have they yorkshire sense of humor very very bad im off skip hunting immediatly after the football tomorrow as no other junk will have been thrown in by the automotive department
na, most of my mates skip dive (one of them got a nicam sony video only needed a new cog in the eject mechanism) & hey when i build up really cheap machines i tend to donate them to charity (just donated 3 pentium 166mmx machines that cost me nothing as i had the parts given) but hey a pc is a pc regardless & if it helps my network (plus my box count on ud [you all should be running that its for a fantastic cause]) so be it but nowt wrong with skip diving, most of my mates know im a bit odgy considering i had spiderman on vhs before the release date in the cinema one mans junk is another mans treasure
*cough* it won't be a seperate sticky... but if it takes off i'm sure it'd be put in the frequent threads sticky... i don't particularily want loads of stickies at the top... 2 is enuff!!
lets hope there are enough skip divers out there to get it on the list, its worthwile getting stuff from skips as its free but it also keeps the poloution out of the ground as you are finding uses for it (even if it is only something like a smoothwall or an mp3player it is still a working pc that would have been junked & cased a lot of nasty stuff to be released into the ground) plus did i mention it was free
New merchandising idea for bit. The good skip guide. kinda like the good pub guide but of skips. ive heard the IBM skip in cardiff is good
(i live in the states) I just salvaged a 1976 chev nova. small block 350 and everything as for computer parts, I salvaged... two full tower no-name cases, a HUGE (like 2 meter square) peice of plexy (no joke) and a few working meeses (gonna mod the oldskool ball mouses, any ideas?
yup thats the one, still dunno if it works tho as i havent get a sentium that i can use in it & im not risking the ram or drives out of any of my other machines, ah well wiat & see what the skip show me later
cheers mate, now i know why it was in the skip as by the sounds of it it did not have enough expansion for the new stuff college wants to do, still dunno if it works or not & cant afford the its, the only p2 in the skip was crushed by part of a ford engine from the automotive department
not me my dad salvaged this a full epos system 386 20 X 2 vfd (serial, made of epos but will work on pc's) 3 com isdn router wise terminal 3 belkinn printer cables (in working order) lost of software on floppys power adapters the epos system is a full nearly new system, displays & keyboard, all that stuff came from bankrupt companys
Things people through away! Well I just popped down to security at the college I work for to see if my delivery from RS had arrived. Unfortunately it hadn't However, on passing the skip I saw that there were loads of power supplies sitting in the bottom. Well I didn't want to risk taking them and finding out that they fry everything (they were mainly AT power supplies anyway) but I did notice that the IT techies had left all the lovely Molex connectors firmly attached. I whipped out my trust pen knife and proceeded to cut the cables from about 8 of the units. There were loads left but I couldn’t reach them without falling in Meblin
