Ok, so I received a domain expiration notice this morning for one of the domains I own. Big red letters DO NOT IGNORE THIS NOTICE its got all my details on it, has a mass of "legal small-print" on the back and also requests £60.00 to renew my domain for two years. First thing was that for a company called domain registry services, you would expect a website, or email address, there isn't one. also the address on the self addressed return envelope is different to the letter. After a bit of googleing i found other people who confirmed it is a scam. So who can i report it to? Nominet? trading standards? I think ill send them something heavy without a stamp just to be a bit annoying. what do you think?? EDIT: just done some more googleing and there are all sorts of things being run out of the address. theres one selling teeth whitening kits, and one of those work from home scams as well hehe. ****s
yep its a scam , i havent got it yet (i think theres a domain up for renewal this month) i remember the last one "EU Registry Services" i would contact your local trading standards about this, as it was prob ment to have stopped. sending them something heavy with no stamp would be funny
My boss at work got one, and he went and paid up! Oops! Then he came to show me (as IT Admin) this deal he got, and I was like "I'm afraid you've just been had sir"!
The information in those letters is actually very easy to get via a whois lookup. I've found the tool pretty useful when I forget someones phone number, as lots of my friends have their own sites. Most domain registration services will have a tech contact, administrative contact, mailing adress, phone number, and even a data of the url expiration in it. My idiot ex-roommate fell for the same thing. I noticed he had a similiar letter on his counter and I told him to throw it away, and he was like "no my isp is sub contacted blah blah blah" 3 months later he gets a real bill with late charges from his isp, and to much time had passed for him to dispute it.
