Like the title says i'm looking for some software for scanning. I got my new MacBook Pro, and it came with the free all-in-one HP jobie, i know its not the best out there but it works well enough for me. So since i have it, i figure i'd start trolling through the piles of 4x6 prints i got and populate an external drive. However the Included HP software sucks, it has like 0 abiliy to do any kind of repitation, so off to google i went. I found sane/xsane which don't support my printer. I found SilverFast, which don't support my printer. Like i said the HP software will make you rip your hair out if you god forbid have to do more then 5 images. I Found VueScan, it has repition and that, but didn't have any kinda dust defect correction ability LIKE the HP one did... (gee i gave HP a point.. fun ). But the app annoys the ....$@#%! out of me. Still its the best since it @ least works with the printer. So its more like the king of crap i guess Device is:: HP PhotoSmart C3100 Why this functionality is not built into iPhoto is beyond me.
I thought the built-in Image Capture app does scanners, but I could be wrong. Worth checking - I don't own a scanner, but the app's help file makes it look like it will do it provided you have the drivers installed. Not sure about that dust correction thing, but that can be solved by a piece of lint-free cloth and maybe a tiny, tiny bit of post-processing.
Scanning and printing REALLY isn't fun on a mac. You try printing to a canon pinter on a network share, where the mac drivers aren't bundled with the OS. Its no possible. And only a handfull of scanners are even supported on OS X.
In response to the uniformed assertion that it is 'no possible' (sic) on the mac, may I suggest: GutenPrint for sharing printers. VueScan for legacy or "Windows only" scanners. Both work quite well, and support hundreds of devices. In response to the original post: If you need color correction and want despeckling, I've been pretty happy with both PhotoShop Elements and GiMPShop (free). Have you tried either?
