Please now view this thread from http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?p=971034#post971034 onwards. The site is provisionally complete, and I'm now after any design criticism you may have. I have now picked a host, but any suggestions regarding the re-write are very welcome. Hi, I've just recieved an email saying that my current host is going to cease hosting soon. Argh! So, my site, www.jazzle.co.uk/scc/, which runs off an Access DB via ASP, either needs a new home, or re-writing. I'd rather stick to PHP (didn't have the choice before), but don't know if I have enough time to convert it in my spare time. I think I have a place for the SCC site during the transition to a new server, but that will be limited to mysql/php too. So, an alternative is finding a host who can give me both mysql/php and access/asp. I've tried searching, but it seems to be difficult to get the right results and would prefer a personal recommendation anyway. All ideas/thoughts/suggestions very welcome.
http://asp2php.naken.cc/ try this see if it converts asp to php successfully? If you need a php server now to test it out on let me know
don't think I've tried that one, but I've had little success with convertors. maybe my code's a bit dodgy! I think I may be okay for a php server for the moment, but need advice on converting the DB. can I enforce the constraints on the new DB if I'm importing the data?
I've not used ASP before so im uncertain of how that works. Im not sure, i guess it depends on what type of field etc your using. If its just numer/ text then Im going to assume that this would be alot easier than if you have times/dates involved. EDIT: You dont seem to have too many records is it not eaiser to start from scratch?
there are 73 items, 32 authors, 42 categories, and 41 category-relations. fortunately it is just text and numbers, so a scratch restart is feasible. I think I should be able to import the data easily enough, maybe I should just bite the bullet and get converting to php (a nicer language anyway).
Can you not export asp files to .dat (or similer) create the tables and then import the .dat files. I would have thought that is possible. I've imported .dat files into sql tables before
yeah, I think I can probably just do it via .csv files. so now I need a host. does anyone know whether it's possible to have both asp and php on the same page?
hmm, maybe fasthosts can help me: http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/productKB/default.asp?article=Fasthosts/ODBC more than my current cost (£25) though at £43.89 (both p.a.)
How about you install IIS locally to run your current site and install WAMP for PHP and MySQL and set it to run on port 81 (well, almost anything other than 80). Now build your DB structure in MySQL and import the data from Access as a CSV file(s). Then you can start converting your ASP to PHP. You already have the design/structure of your website so converting should be a simple task
hmm, both look good, will have to compare them. any other suggestions welcome. would like to have more than one DB, php def desireable.
Well I've spoken to the current and previous owners of k1z.com on MSN several times and the servers are constantly being upgraded and expanded. If there is ever a problem with downtime (very rare) it's resolved within minutes. Any problems I have had with exceeding bandwidth limits are always dealt with forgivingly and understandingly. Without a doubt the best host I've used.
I'd say everything ouija said but about my supplier, and they just started some kind of text message service to notify you of problems or something.
not sure mate, no plug was intended like. **goes off to find out** yeah mate i can be if i recommend you. hint hint
may want to try www.unitedhosting.co.uk - matts a great guy over there. Their price is matched by their quality and customer support.
now that looks very good, how long you been keeping them under your hat? (still happy to get other suggestions, but think the above is 'winning' at the mo edit: apart from the prices!, double waht I pay now. )
