Hey okay basically my usb ports seem to have minds of their own and will disconnect things randomly. this isnt normally a problem until i wanna use my external hard drive for backups, or more recently, wireless connection. with the external drive, its a 120 gb maxtor which i put in a housing, it will be backing up files but after some time (half hour or so) it will just seem to have stopped and i get 'Delayed Write Fail' pop ups everywhere which is a pain. with the wireless adapter ill be online and it will just drop out and come back again sometimes and have to reconnect and whatever. sometimes with both devices i get 'unknown device in usb' 'windows does not recognise' yada yada and have to turn computer off admitting defeat. ive tried both in different ports, motherboard and pci usb slots, and none of them have power saving enabled. any ideas? Party AMD athlon 2400+ abit NF7s rev2 1 gig PNY ram 160 sata radeon 9600 pro
Sounds like either the drivers need to be reinstalled or there are signs of problems with the motherboard. Disconnect all your USB devices (thats EVERYTHING), goto device manager, delete all the USB ports and drivers. Restart the machine, let it install them. Restart again. Plug things back in one by one and see if they work. Also make sure you update your chipset drivers.
im trying that now Dougedy - restarted and windows installed all the usb ports again - didnt give me a chance to whip out my driver cds even when i tried that im being told the drivers i wanna put on arent any better. the only thing connected now is my wlan adapter, and that thing just gave me hell in my 2 belkin pci usb slots, but it seems to like this port on the motherboard .. .for now.. but what could cause this cause im sure its gonna happen again - i dont think, and hope, its not my motherboard dying, and all the drivers are up to date. . ah wait. . cept the belkin ones. . .lets see if that does anything.
I had this problem on an old comptuer back home. Although with me the problem was less random. If the device was plugged in when the comptuer was turned on, then it worked fine, and would not disconnect it. However, if the device was plugged in while the computer was running, the computer would occasionally stop detecting it, and detect it again. Or not detect it again. I'm not sure if that's the same as your problem, and it's not a solution anyway, but it will serve as a stop gap. Although if it's your WLAN card that is connected via USB, I'm guessing that'll be a permanent connection and so this won't apply.
okay. ..my computer is now more of a mess than it was originially . now the adapter wont connect to the net at all im pretty sure ive done this wrong - im on bt homehub wonder if anyone can help - theres the bt software, the windows software, and the dlink software, all wanting to connect. but none are now? aaah. i hate wireless. ethernet cable > > laptop > > 2 second internet connection wireless adapter >> computer > >> haa..hahaa.hahaa : (
Just a quick head's up. I get the delayed write failed message all the time with my external drive. It's used for backing up or attempting to recover files from duffed up computers. So the hard disk or the USB port is constantly changing. It's one of the Icy Box efforts, thought it was due to their lower price. Also, check out if you've got enough power in the port.... Um, plug the devices via a powered hub for awhile, see if that fixes it.
Can you supply any information about the system? Specifically, information on the chipset would be helpful. Things to look into: First, it sounds like the US stack got hosed on the lower levels. I don't remember what the files at the bottom of the stack are. But start by unistalling the drivers, disabling USB in the BIOS before bringing the OS back up, then running driver cleaner. If the chipset is an Intel one, let XP use the default drivers. Once USB devices are working try to see if there is a timeout with just the HD connected. USB mass storage devices use bulk transfers which means that USB sends data when there is free bandwidth. It may be possible that all the BW is being eaten by other devices and communications are no longer reliabale. Disable USB 2.0/high speed/EHCI in the BIOS to force USB 1.1 mode. It will be slow, but it gets the EHCI out of the picture. If you should come across an option for USB controller hand off in the BIOS, and it is an AMI BIOS, make sure that option is disabled.
hey im still having problems i tried doing the reinstall for the drivers still no joy im runnin an AXP 2400+ abit nf7-s v2.0 1 gig -some kinda- ram radeon 9600 pro 160 seagate sata on the usb. . . the external drive in the ICY BOX thing. . .looked pretty for about a year now its not working i hate it logitech mouse scanner printer usb 1 hub - webcam - joystick - im not sure what that is :S it could be the scanner which in that case means its not in the back i heard via never get this kinda thing right.. anyway i tried the drive direct to ide and it works great so im glad its not the one kicking it. as for the wireless adapter - had a friend test it looks like its dead so forget about that. . tis just my drive i need help with pleaaase
NF7 is an nforce based board. I'm not aware of any issues with the USB controllers there. I would start by connecting the USB drive directly to one of the USB ports on the back of the computer near where the NIC port is. It sounds like you are using a USB 1.1 hub if I'm reading this corectly. Even USB full speed interfaces can be 'grumpy' when dealing with high speed capable USB mass storage devices. There might also be a problem with the power supply or even the power connector to the USB enclosure being flaky. And it is also not unhead of for these thing to just die on occasion. But try connecting it directly to your computer before passing this judgement on the drive.
yeah i dont think it is a usb problem ive just done a fresh OS install and have no other device trouble... Ive gotten fed up of the icy box enclosure though cause thats still whining. i just put the drive from the houseing into my computer now and am using it like this cause everytime i try to copy files over to the icybox [connected to the mobo usb. .not the hub] it actually crashes my computer, and i cant live like that. as for IDE. . its copying things as we speak.. Are Icybox difficult with anyone else?
