FALMOUTH, Massachusetts (AP) -- The discovery of two large pieces of the Titanic's hull on the ocean floor indicates the fabled luxury liner sank faster than previously thought, researchers said Monday.

The hull pieces were a crucial part of the ship's structure and make up a bottom section of the vessel missing when the wreck was first located in 1985, the researchers said.

After the bottom section of the hull broke free, the bow and stern split, said Roger Long, a naval architect who analyzed the find.

The stern, which was still buoyant and filled with survivors, likely plunged toward the North Atlantic floor about five minutes later.

"It would have been immediately terrifying," he said.

Previous researchers believed the ship broke in just two major pieces, the bow and stern, which was how the sinking was depicted in the 1997 film version of the catastrophe.

Woo! The unsinkable ship once again proves how sinkable it is :D

Perhaps just add the extra five minutes the ship took to sink? :D

A relative of mine went down with the Titanic, and living in Southampton I know a fair bit about the Titanic, the ship was said to be unsinkable, but in fact it was plagued with problems before the maiden voyage. So this isn't surprising. In fact I'm surprised that they are surprised, as the ship hit the iceberg on it's front, it would make sense for the hull to go down before the rest of the ship.

Not trying to be offensive, just kind of sick of the big dead boat. That said, however, I wonder if they'll ever actually know what happened.

I heard there is some really good evidence that aliens flew down and split the ship in two with one of those fancy space lasers. :D

Yeah, the US test audience didn't like it, so they are having one where Keanu Reeves manages to save the titanic which was rushing out of control toward the iceberg, but could not be stopped because a bomb connected to the engines was rigged to go off if its speed dropped below 60 knots. But then the whole thing turns out to be a consensual hallucination engineered by machine minds to control humans whose bodies are used as an thermo-electric power source, and he needs to battle the evil robots. But they turn out to be demons and he turns out to be at the centre of an eternal battle between Good and Evil. But that's OK because he kicks Evil's ass and gets the girl. He just doesn't get all emotional about it like that wuss Leonardo di Caprio.

Oh, and in the US audiance-approved version, Romeo and Juliet don't top themselves, but go on a wild crime spree through the US whilst they become the obsessive focus of the media and become famous. They escape to Mexico but the bar they stumble into turns out to be an ancient vampire haunt. Enter the usual battle between Good and Evil (Keanu makes a cameo appearance) and they defeat the vampire queen and ride off in the sunrise...

Don't worry about it. I'm just glad we banned robbins1940 when we did... or this discussion would really have deteriorated... :worried:

Yeah, but you know how it is with eye witnesses... especially eye witnesses who are in a total panic, preoccupied with trying to escape and survive, whilst freezing their nuts off in the pitch-black dark (it was new moon). Not exactly conditions in which you can acquire a clear and objective overview...

lol that character robbins... what a kook...

If he was alive in that time period he'd be the one to say it was unsinkable...

I think Keanu Reeves would bring a real california dude appeal to the Titanic 2 - Queen Elizabeth...

"Dude, do you see that in the water over there?" "Like it's coming for us quickly" "Oh, like, it's throwing off some narly waves" "Like I'm totally gonna grab my board, yeaaaah riiiighhhtt"

    Nexx, you're my hero.

I'd quote that entire block as my sig, but it's too long...and since none of it is as good without the rest of it, I'll leave it be.
