Saw this on Yahoo! a few minutes ago: Here's the full article. Pretty interesting stuff. Could this be the ultimate in computer modding. Stealth drives, anyone? -monkey
First teleportation now cloaking - sweet I sure hope by "cloak" they actually mean "cloak" as in a cloth or something, at least eventually. A cloak like harry potters would be sweet no matter what it cost
From what I understand this won't actually do anything against light - humans will still be able to see objects just fine - it'll just be invisible to radar and microwave. Certainly an intresting prospect for most militaries, but hardly personal cloak cloaks yet
Interesting, but microwaves are so much easier to cloak than light. The wavelength is a few orders of magnitudes bigger for starters.
The article mentioned that this is different than "hiding" airplanes from radar. In the article, it mentions that we can't yet make planes invisible to radar, we can only make them harder to find (reducing parallel surfaces, radar-absorbing materials, etc.). The researchers feel that the initial steps they have taken can be applied to making an object invisible in a room, effectively bending the light around it in the same manner asa mirage. Yes, still a long way off from Harry Potter's cloak, but certainly an interesting notion. -monkey
I trust science so this is good enough for me - 20 years ago many would have said this impossible so for people to be moving on from saying things are impossible to "very challenging" is a nice relief.
