As if I didnt have enough going wrong with my computer, it seems as if I've managed to scratch the base of my LRWW waterblock. Its a little gouge either right next to, or on the bit that touches the cpu core. Typical.

Anyway, I've had to spend too much money already and I dont want to have to buy a new block. My previous lapping efforts have been pretty bad for overall flatness. How can I go about getting this little gouge out?

    any tips guys?
    cheers

    you will need

    1. A mirror or other perfectly flat surface (glass is not flat so dont let people tell you it is)
    2. wet'n'dry grades 320-800
    3. some water and fairy liquid

Start at the corsest grade of paper and lap the best you can keeping the block flat with eaven pressure all the time. Lap in a straight line and then rotate 90deg and do it again

repeate for all grades of paper

Its relly simple. the big points are eaven pressure and perfectly flat surface :thumb:

thats pretty much how i tried before. I guess I wasnt holding it straight enough, and I started on 800 grit

it was practically impossible to keep the paper flat, it kept curling up. was I usign too much water maybe?

any ideas how long it might take to get through about 1mm of copper?

    thanks man,

It will take a while but you could allways use corse paper to start with. ive lapped 100s of hsinks+blocks and i allways found 320 was a good start but if it has a huge groove in it try a lower grade paper like 180.

How big is the gash? Might not even be an issue if it doesnt actually touch the core in that section.

If you still want to lap it anyways just get the mirror like mentioned and try to wrap the paper around it so that the weight of you pushing helps to hold the paper to the mirror..

its not a big gash, i just noticed it a couple days ago when i put my new cpu in. it looked like it was just off where it touches the core.
I'm concerned cos I can only get my XP-M 2500 to about 2.5. Its a good stepping so i think it should do more..
    i'll have a closer look..

Its probably not the waterblock that causing you not to beable to oc as high as you want. Whats are the temps for the cpu?

was about 48-49 earlier at 1.85V / 2.4Ghz under load
now its 52 idle at 1.85 /2.4Gz idle

im getting narked with this system, watercooling + the lot.
can't get 2.5 stable now. I think my mobo has something to do with it.. looking at the Vcore in cpu-z its fluctuating 1.75 - 1.85V

    cant be good

i need to flush the system but havent got time ATM. there is some goo on my pipes. remnants of too much water wetter i think.
I have a DFI infinity sitting on the shelf here but i'm not gonna play with that in my WC case just yet, its too much hastle putting it all together so I'm gonna get it stable on my desk first using a stock XP heatsink, then whap it in + crank the speed up.

first things first tho, i want to get this sorted out.

    Sounds like a big fluctuation.

    Try

Better PSU (what you running atm?)
    Mosfet cooling
    Reseating your block

got an enermax 350W, rails all look good.
    mosfets cooled ;)
yep, gonna try that again later when i get 30 mins :p

it has to be somethign to do with the cooling, i mean my XP1800 was cooler than this at 2.125V and 2.4Ghz.
i'm sure the scratch happened in between CPUs
