    Anyone know of any software the i can use to capture video from games and save as an avi.

    games i'm looking to record are direct x

    A lot of games have a Screenshot button, otherwise, you can probably just use the "Print Screen" button, then paste it into something even as simple as paint...

    yeah screen shots is not a problem its the video + audio i want to capture not just a still image

    Sorry, misunderstood - there's a shedload of different terms for still images taken from a screen. Good luck.

    try fraps.

    i use it to get fps info, but it also supports screen & video capture for both d3d and ogl games.

    fraps works does the full version do bigger than 640 * 480?

When I view the AVI movie I only see a quarter of the screen. How can I capture the entire screen area? 

Fraps can only currently capture at a maximum resolution of 640x480. 
Make sure that you configure the game to use this resolution before recording a movie. 
Also disable anti-aliasing if it is currently enabled.
    and as far as i know, fraps is freeware, i.e. no full versoin to speak of ...
