is it possible to add a second power supply my computer keeps freezing because of power loss i don't want to remove anything so i was wondering if i can add a second power supply i have 4 hd's 3 cd rom's floppy drive zip drive and 7 fans with a 420 power supply
Howzit boet, Well yeah you can add another power unit to power the four hard drive's, three cd rom's, zip drive, and seven fans , if you like. But if i was you, i'd just buy a decent power unit, tagan 480w for example, make things easyer. And are you sure it's a power loss that's causing the freezing? Cheers, Rob,
Just whack in a decent brand - 480W/550W something like that. Tagan, Enermax, Thermaltake etc Also - before you do - check your current voltages and record them. Test to see if it actually is the psu fluctuating.
Are you using any HD cooling fans? buy Hd heat pipes and install them in each drive. when run 1 huge 120mm fan over them, shoudl keep them cool
usually struggling power supplies cause the system to reboot rather than just freeze, anyone else notice that? i've had 4 hdds, 1 dvd-rom, 1 dvd-rw, a toasty thunderbird etc... running from an enermax 350w and never had a problem, but if it's just a cheap psu u have then i would be certainly waving a finger toward it
Like the others say - just put a good power supply in there instead of rigging two POS ones together. It will work but damn it will look bad and probably still not work as good as one good power supply.
Better of with a good quality PSU, but yes you can add another PSU no probs. You will have to switch it on manally (green and black on the ATX plug) or wire it up to the other PSU so that it comes on at the same time.
yea, ive run a similar amount on a dual p3 setup on the same psu. If there's a problem itll crash as soon as the system loads of you get frozen boots.
it's not a cheap power supply Enermax 420 watt noisetaker and i don't have the money to buy a new power supply right now thats why i was asking i have another Enermax 420 that i'm not useing
ok you need a relay to run off one of the 12V lines on the main Psu and the relay needs to swich the green wire to any black wire (ground). That would turn the second psu on at the same time as the first.
The above might not neccesarily work. Your supply will need a minimum current draw on the 3.3 or 5v rail to work properly. 1A or so. Just find a suitable resistor and hook it in. Also, eaiser and cheaper than a relay, simply run a wire from the green wire on the main PSU (one connected to the motherboard) to the green wire on the second PSU.
well if he is going to use it it run some hd's or cd rom's..... then the load will be there and the psu will work with no load but not have a stable out put. edit:: if you do that ^^ you need to do the same to a black wire to get the second psu to work
