Joe, I need your help! :) I'm mastering my swordmanship, or whatever the terminology is, and I've elarned enough insults to defeat pirates, and several have said "You're good enough to fight the sword master", but when I knock on the door at the Big Body Pirate Gym, I just get "There's no answer".

What am I supposed to do now!?

    Spoilers:

You go to the shopkeeper and ask him to speak to her

He'll wander off to her house and you follow him there

Off the top of my head, I haven't played it in ages though.

The shopkeeper and the sword master should have a conversation which you evesdrop on, then you can go over and speak to her.

Pfft - and all before I can even get into the convo.

Have you done the other two trials? Did you kill Guybrush? Did you look in the stump in the woods at the fork? SO MANY QUESTIONS!

You must be one of the few people who actually waited for 10 minutes, just to see what would happen.

By the way Joe, have you noticed you're mentioned on the Wikipedia entry for Monkey Island?

This is the first trial I've done (just defeated the swordsmaster). I can't believe I've left playing this for so long, but I managed to pick up a copy from a friend of a friend for free the other day (along with the sequel).

It really is a quality game!

It's bloody awesome is what it is - and number two is even better, barring the rather surreal ending. The only annoying part of the first game is the treasure hunting trial.

Number 3 is damn good too - a let down in some respects, but a singing success (literally) overall.

Don't even mention number four. I hate that game. It's ****ing ****.

    A: My ass.

That's Monkey Island 4. You might play it and think its OK, nothing to get too excited about, but good fundamentally. You'd be right, but it's by far the weakest point in the series and both contradicts and spoils plotlines established in the first games.

My advice? If you can stomach all the text reading and don't need the voices then just download the first two games for PC - you can find them easily with some google searches and, since they are abandonware, there's no guilt. If not then track down a copy of the third game - it has better graphics and full sound and voice and is just as funny and true to the series.

    The breakdown of the series:

The Secret of Monkey Island - (good)
The Secret of Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge - (best)
The Curse of Monkey Island - (Damn good)
Escape From Monkey Island - (awful)
