    Just a quick heads up

    http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/section-8/

I have no interweb at home so wont be able to get my teeth into this for about a week. Has been receiving good comments from many though. Apparently its like Planetside without the MMO elements, or Tribes but better thought out in a few areas.

Anyways there has been a closed beta for a while now so the open beta includes a lot of bug fixes/extra features etc. Would be good to get a little bit-techers corps on the go as some of the maps are up to 64 players.

    peace out

You had me at "like tribes but better" - I used to love tribes 1 and tribes 2 to a lesser extent, so I'm in the download queue now :)

just thought, if in a week i cant get a place due to this being a "limited" public beta im gonna be kicking myself for making this post!

@zoon - yup i know, thats what attracted me to it over on rock paper shotgun. jet packs, super sprint modes, dropping into the map from overhead (and trying to avoid anti aircraft), as well as base based (that right?) gameplay, all very Tribes, and all very good :D

Why don't you sign up for a beta key now and then get round to it next week ? :p

    It's what i'd do !

Anyhow, i've finished downloading it but the thing seems to not even want to install :S.

Double-clicked the icon and the Windows Explorer seems to have hung ¬.¬

Yeah as the other guys say, sign up now, they email you the beta key. Download it later!

Heck if you get stuck I'm sure I can whack it on a DVD or somat.

And yes, that's tribes alright. Used to be in a really good clan, they took pity on me, I'm only average :p

Don't bother. Played it at mFestival and it's rubbish. Offers nothing new. Typical gear > skill affair.

Just been playing it for an hour or so.

It seems alright however ti do have a few annoyances...

The supersprint "Overdrive" is useful for covering long distances but i'm finding it a little difficult to gauge coming out of it since there's a delay between you moving from the 3rd person overdrive to the 1st person view.

Also going into it is a bit strage, there's a little bar that rises as you sprint which essentially shows you how much progress is needed before you kick into overdrive, however sometimes it feels like ages before it kicks in (i.e. when you just want to get away/start moving) and sometimes it feels like it's too soon (like when you're sprinting after an enemy round a corner). That said, i believe there's an option to turn off automatic overdrive so will have to try it out.

The aiming/iron sights system also seems to be a bit off, since the right click is actually a zoom, however there's a delay to zoom in which doesn't feel snappy enough imo. There's also a lock-on system which you can use whilst in zoom however i'm not sure whether or not i like it... it only lasts a few seconds and there appears to be a relatively decent cooldown time meaning it can't be spammed however i don't see the point of it since the whole point of FPSs are to rely on your own aim? lol

Also the weapons imo feel a bit off, the pistol seems rather useless and the sniper rifle, whilst alright doesn't zoom enough (you get the same amount of zoom from the assault rifle i think) and the zoom controls are annoying since there's only two levels and is toggled by the mousewheel... that's toggled, not controlled, so if you scroll forward (like i normally do) i end up zooming in and out whilst if you want to change the zoom level once, you have to move the wheel one notch which is rather painful (metaphorically) when you're in the middle of a firefight.

That's all i cba to write about before having my dinner lol.

Got mine the other day, was also part of the closed beta since day 1. It's a fairly good game but the combat just doesn't sit right with me, the aiming is just a pile of junk IMO.

I do love burning in and stuff.

I play it through steam (added to game list) so if you guys wanna game, go ahead and add me: DarkLord7854

Hmm, not too sure what you mean by consolified, but I compare this game to Bf2142 a lot and the aiming in 2142 (and BF2) is far superior and more accurate.

It just feels the weapons do nearly no damage when you aim it at the enemy, but the enemy does 6x more damage than you unless you get it at just the perfect angle which is hard to do.

I've just found it extremely hard & frustrating to kill people with the guns. Specially the missile launcher. It only does damage to vehicles, if you shoot it at a player, it barely does any damage.

Oh, yea, the lock-on thing is a waste of time because it aims at the chest, so yea.. any decent damage has to be aimed at the head.

had a quick go today, enjoyed it, it does remind me of UT3 quite a lot though and you're right nowhere near enough power in the weapons
