Hi guys, Been having a few headaches with SecuROM for a few months now. Occasionally, when I try to launch a game protected by SecuROM, the game will fail to load and a helpful little popup box tells me to "insert the original disc, instead of a backup". Obviously, I'm a little confused, as that is exactly what's in the drive. Sometimes, after trying to launch a few times it will work, other times a reboot is necessary and other times, even that doesn't seem to help. IIRC, the first time I had a problem was when I tried to install World In Conflict, a little while after Christmas. The disc wasn't "seen" by my computer, yet it was read fine by another computer I tested it on. A firmware update seemed to sort the problem of the disc being "seen" but after installation, the problems began. I'm not sure if the problem is getting worse or whether it's the fact that I recently bought some SecuROM protected titles (GRID, for example) but trying to reinstall Bioshock has left me at a complete standstill as the installer always thinks I have a dodgy disc in the drive, which means the online activation and "auto-patch" feature always fail. So, for now I have nice £30 Bioshock coaster. I've been in touch with SecuROM support and despite them being quite quick to reply (usually within 24hrs) they have so far failed to provide any solutions. I have tried everything I can think of, the DVD drive is a Pioneer DVR-215BK, running the latest firmware (1.18). The only conclusion I can come to is a dodgy SecuROM install or a software conflict. Just wondered if anybody else has ever had the same/similar problems and how/if you resolved them?
Unless you use Daemon Tools, witch is free, (uses OPTIONAL ads to pay it, you can un-check them at the setup, or safely uninstall them after the setup). http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/announcements.php
Thanks for the replies guys I did have Daemon Tools installed but that was installed after the initial problems had already began. I have since uninstalled it and cleaned the registry, yet the problem persists. I've read that certain disc burning apps can cause a problem but the only one I currently have installed is burrrn (for burning wavs using .cue sheets) and again, the problem had started before I installed it. I'm still thinking it's a software conflict but short of reinstalling Vista I'm at a loss as to what to do
Just as a quick update guys, looks like I was most probably right about a software conflict. I rebooted in safe mode (with networking) and Bioshock installed, activated and auto-patched without a hiccup. When I rebooted the machine it took about 40 secs reading the disc but eventually loaded without any errors. Still not sure what's causing it but at least I've narrowed it down a little.
