alright. this is the first mod that i'll have ever posted on a forum. and kinda the first major mod ive ever done, everything else has been just adding LED's, castors to the bottom of my rig, yada yada yada. simple little stuff. anywho. this is pretty simple, mostly just to get myself into the idea of *braces self* putting computer components on a non-standard case.... :duh: ....anyway. a couple thoughts of mine were to mod it into some kind of a small cube, with just the cartridge slot and LCD showing, with a switch for power and a knob for volume. but, i dont know how i would move the buttons/D-Pad. possibly find an oldschool-looking joystick with 4 buttons, for the A B Start and Select buttons, but it still comes down to how would i wire it into the GB? more ideas include possibly backlighting the GB LCD, more powerful speaker. little things like that, and eventually end up with a custom battery-powered GameCube with a built in LCD! w00t.. but, would any of these work? thanks!

oh, and before you go, a pic! (btw, if this doesnt work, feel free to email me and tell me. never posted a pic to bit-tech forums. im a virgin to bit-tech! :jawdrop: )

well I think that the buttons (including D-pad) are all momentary switches which means all u have to do is solder wires to each part of where the switches would rest on, the at the end of the wires have momentary switches, like pushbuttons solder to them which basically allows you to move the buttons anywhere you want :)

I THINK a joystick kinda thing like in mame machines could be used here if thats any use to you? :)

hope i helped in some way :dremel:

thanks retrogamer! been checking out eBay, found what i think will work.

    Mame Joystick:

    4 Jamma Buttons:

now as far as other supplies go, i wont need much. ill grab a massive connector at RadioShack for the joystick connector i have in mind, i'll need a black volume knob, if i can figure out how to replace the existing knob. some sort of a cool looking toggle for the power, maybe a paddle switch. meh, ill look at what the ol' Shack has. i would like to hook a better speaker up to the GB, but i dunno how much power the current one consumes, or what the max power of speaker i could put in is. for the box im gonna put it all in, im gonna custom make it, so i need a sheet or two of some acrylic. oh, and a heat gun to work it all with. checked eBay for those, and came up with this:

    Black Acrylic Plexi:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=75564&item=8141992562&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
maybe? dunno. still getting used to SketchUp, when i get a good drawing ill post it, and measure out total surface area (of SU can do that? if anyone can help with that, i would...give you a huge thanks, and...erm...a smiley that looks like this !! w00t). but, this looks big enough to easily be able to do what i want

    Heat Gun:

this looks like the norm as far as temps go, and the shipping and part cost are cheap. im gonna go ahead and bid on it, and it ends so soon i assume i will have won/lost before anyone reads this. so, tell me if i did the right thing! mwaha.

EDIT: nvm the plexi post, typed "buy plexiglass near prior lake, MN" to google, and it popped up my own, neighborhood Ace Hardware. im gonna try to drop by tomorrow and grab a piece. plus, this way i dont pay shipping, and its easy to go back for more if i underestimate. w00t

retrogamer ~ Thanks for the MAME joystick tip. completely didnt even think about that. a quick google search confirmed, and the next stop was eBay. thanks :D

dastt ~ checked out those pics, looks pretty pimp. im impressed with how flush you got the gamegear to the case. btw, do you run that through your comp controls, or do you have an external controller of some sort to run it? had a gamegear for a little while, pretty powerful sucker, full color and very bright LCD, and a wicked-loud speaker. sound was an issue though. :worried:

You should mod a pocket pc into the gameboy. Then run a gameboy emulator on it. MAME will run on it too. And I think the CF/SD slot will be in the cartridge slot. Wire the gameboy speaker and controls to the pocketpc board, as it will make better game controls.

I had the buttons moved right to the front benzel also, there kind of hard to see in the pics but there red and black, i never did get around to relocating the volume control, maybe i should dig that mod out and finish it, i also had my nes in a drive bay and moved all the power and controller ports to a drive bay cover but cant find the pics right now :duh:

so you had no troubles just directly soldering the buttons/joystick to the leads on the GameBoy mainboard? thats comforting...got my plexi, now i just have to wait for my heat gun to get here, and im off! mwaha :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:. as far as the whole PocketPC idea went, it sounds like a great idea, but i can hardly follow the description. i doubt i could pull that one off :eeek: :eeek:
