not sure where exactly to post this, but since its based on an electronics project, I'll post here. I just built an IR reiver to go on my serial port. I found the plans on www.lirc.com. I had all the parts lying around so I figured why not. It works, but now I have a question of software. I'm using it on an XP based box. I tried winlirc, but it has a few drawbacks, I also tried pc remote control, but the version is beta, and the shareware version is a bit limited for me to make a final verdict on it. Any other packages folks here would recommend?

you say that the winLIRC program is a bit limited? what do you need that it doesn't have? after all.. all you need lirc to is to assign different signals to different buttons...

I use winlirc to take care of the signals and then use Girder to take care of the controlling of stuff...

Well I have used winlirc to assign buttons and then uICE to control things.

I have a quick how to for uICE on my site under IR explained.

WinLIRC cannot make use of a controller that uses two different protocols, or at least there is no way that I have found. Also, the fact that it is not a 'one progam solution' can be fustrating. (it's a double edged sword)
I did like that it is quick to set up, reconizes protocols, and can analize remote control data. But I don't like the lack of info on the protocols, the inability to use a remote that uses more than one protocol, and that when you get it running, it can't really control any programs. Links to other software used for the actual control, and some info links or other awareness rasing system on remote protocols would have been nice.

Next in PC Remote Control. The current beta can take info from the remote directly, and doesn't necessarily care about an IR protocol. It is the interface to programs directly, and you can set it up to do any KB or mouse function. It can also be set up with different profiles for different programs. But the program is quite confusing, and a beta. Wile it looks like it'll be nice one I figure thing out, the demo version is quite limited, and I'm not sure I'm ready to spend money on this particular package yet.

Besides all of this, I wanted to know what other options were out there.

Have a look at uICE It can be used to learn the remotes and control stuff.

If you have an LCD then why not use LCDC there is an IR plugin that will let you train the remote and control all the usual stuff.
