    Hi all,

I've got a problem with CS:S thats making the game unplayable. The problem is that sometimes when I tap left or right, nothing happens, the keys are definately being depressed fully, but its as if I hadn't hit them. Then other times, I tap the key, and its as if I've held it for 2 seconds, when I've only tapped it(but again, depressed fully). As far as I'm aware this only happens with left and right, but I use foward and back so infrequently(well, W is pressed all the time nearly) that its possible I just havn't noticed the problem.

This issue happens maybe once of both types(non-press and over-press) for every 5 or 6 keypresses, so obviously its making the game totaly unplayable.

I've tried re-installing, which had no effect, I've tried playing on my own local server to check its not lag, choke or loss and its none of them.

So, any ideas on this? I'm thinking it may be my PSU lacking in power, since that sort of thing does sometimes happen when a PSU is lacking, but I would expect there to be similar problems in all high spec games if that were the case, and I don't get it at all in NFSU:MW.

Any ideas, suggestions, links, or free uber PSU's welcome. The one in question is an Antec 330, so in theory should be far more tehn enough for my fairly meagre system.

Umm, bout 2-3 years old maybe, but the things solid as a rock in everything else, thats why I don't think its the PSU, the rails are also all within reasonable(5%) limits, so it seems weird that the PSU would be causing issues in one game but not any others.

Actually, since its a decent brand, and probably able to provide about 300-330W, it should be enough for the system, which is nothing special. Just an old barton with a 9600Pro, which probably doesn't ever use more then about 250W.

I'll try a different keyboard, and its not the end of the world if I don't get it sorted, I'm building a new rig sometime this or early next month, It'd just be nice to play some CS:S. I should point out that this is a recent problem, up untill maybe mid december(from about august) I'd been playing happily for many many hours with zero problems.

I've got to ask, have you tried a different keyboard?

It sounds like a simple software lag. Have you checked what's running in the background. Try setting up a different partition, a fresh windows and CS:S install and see where that gets you.

The partition is fairly new(as is the HDD). Maybe 2-3 months old, I've installed CS:S twice on it, same problem. Gonna try a new KB next time I shutdown. Thanks for replies guys :)

Could be software lag, but sounds like a dying keyboard. On the offchance you're using a dual-core proc, try setting the affinity to a single core. I had an old dying compaq keyboard cough up some really odd characters from typing (ya know, those alt+random types)

I'm running an old barton, so its not that, thats also why I doubt its the PSU, because other games are fine.

this sounds ridiculous but is it a legacy keyboard? I remember they can only except so many key presses at a time, and if more are activated keys won't respond or will act locked up. Have you tried different binds? maybe just arrow keys to see if you can move around okay. I'm guessing its something stupid like that, specially if its doing it with other keyboards as you say.

I used to have a similar problem with a cheap ps2 keyboard, I'd find my left arrow key wouldn't respond if any other key was pressed at the same time. I got a new keyboard (ps2 agian) and it was fixed.
Like your problem this didn't happen all the time or in every game, so i suspect the keyboard.

I have had problems with the movement keys 'sticking'(software only) in CS:S, causing me to run out into open areas unwillingly, on my Logitech LX700 Duo. I have since upgraded to a Logitech G15 KB + Logitech G5 Mouse(these are both corded devices, so no possibility of wireless lag/interference), yet still I have random occurences of these 'sticky keys'(in no way related to Windows XP Sticky Keys)

I have a 620W Enermax Liberty, so power does not appear to be the cause here.

I know that when I get really deep into a match of CS, I am constantly tapping the keys in all directions, probably some sort of sub-conscious nervousness or something. Anyway, all this tapping may cause some kind of memory/buffer overflow kind of thing(this is a long shot, I know). Perhaps changing the heap size could improve this? I recall that HL2 in its early versions had problems with the default heap size. If you manage to find a solution, please post it. I wouldn't mind knowing either.

Well I finally got around to testing it with another keyboard, its a brand new one I got(free) from scan, and apart from being horrible to type on, works fine.

I get exactly the same problem though, its just as if sometimes input is just ignored, and then enacted a few seconds later, or sometimes, just like I described above.

I'm thinking either my PS/2 or mobo is being brokenish, or that my PSU is lacking power/giving up the ghost.

Any further suggestions though, will be much apreciated.

Btw, this is not a case of too many keys being pressed at the same time, for a very long time everything was fine, this is a recently occuring problem.

Nope, they're both PS/2, tahts why I'm tihnking maybe my PS/2 port is borken. I would try a USB keyboard, but they're rather expensive, and I should have a new system going fairly shortly, so its not a big enough deal to buy a USB keyboard, plus, monies going to get tight when I spend lots on the new rig.

Longshot here, but have you adjusted the repeat rate for key presses? Try fiddling with it.

I'm not sure, how would I do this? Is there a command in the config file I can tweak?
