Yes yes I know what you are thinking another boring cube pc. However I think this one is a little different.

Behold... (click image for a slightly larger version)

Three motherboards, three power supplies, 6+ hard drives (not added yet), 8 12mm fans. All in a 40cm cube. Watercooling a possibility though doubtful. Unsure of construction materials, either steel, alum or acrylic. Hard drives will be mounted in a rack directly behind the front intake fans.

[BTW: I am by no means planning this as a definite project. I am simply toying with ideas and wondering what will work and what wont]

What do you guys think ?

ROFL...Read the last bit of my first post. I'm just tossing around ideas.

I'd dearly like to build a high end server, as a render farm, webserver, file server, etc. The cheapest way to do it ( I think ) is not to go all out on a dual xeon server or something, but to build a cluster of "regular" pc's.

Nice design. Seems to have quite a bit of wasted space though. You could save some by making the motherboard section smaller...but then it wouldn't be a cube would it ? :D

Might also want to get some ventilation to those hard drives. They are kinda tucked away up in the top there and might get warm.

Ahh well there you go then. Water cooling should fit in there easily.

Nah Linux for the server portion of it anyway. However I will have windows on there as well, seeing as I intend to use it as a render farm and game machine. Can't do that in linux :p

Trouble is linux is no good if you are doing any kind of multimedia work. There are no versions of Macromedia Products on it, no decent photo or video editing software, no 3D packages. Plus getting games to work properly is a pain in the arse. So until the Linux community get off their arses, make it easier for the common man to use, and get some 3rd party software support, Windows is the only choice for Multimedia (unless you count Macs, but lets not got there )
