Hey, well, I'm trying to setup a server here as my current webspace is very quickly running out of room lol. I've found a program that I like (LiteServe) and will proably be running it on a very stable system equiped with a dumbed down version of 98se. And because I'm on a network, I'm not sure about how to go about getting it to work as a webserver. Anybody on the current network can connect to that computers ip on the network and it will connect and the server program works ok, but just simply connecting to the cable modems ip shows a "page can not be displayed" error. Would there be a setting in my router that I would need to ajust (if so, I'll need to buy a new one, as somebody hacked my current one and ****ed the password over) to get it to point to that computer, or is it something like: http://cable.modem's.ip:/computers.ip.on.network If that made any sense, and you can help, please do! Because once I get it setup and working properly, I'll be offering webspace to anybody who wants it (how does unlimited bandwidth, 100MB storage, and ftp access sound?). And please no comments about "well you should go to linux" because I have no clue whatsoever about linux, and I don't have any clue how to set it up (though if somebody could point me in the direction of a good distro for a server, and help me set it up that would be good as well yeah). Please help!!!!
ya got to setup port forwarding on the roughter so that say any request comming in over the net into the roughter on port 80 (default http) will be sent to port 80 of the pc in the network serving as the server. i had to do this with my roughter it ain't hard and look for a rest butten on the roughter both of mine fave one and it'll reset the password to the defalt.
Welp, no luck, I ajust all the setting's that should allow it to work, and when you connect to my ip, it doesn't connect to the server. Any other help?
what roughter? liteserver sayes that it uses ports 21, 23, 25, 80, and 110 did you map all of those to the right computer. also do you have a url we could try becouse i just moved back into my dorm and i can access my website from inside my network using the ip of that pc on the network but when i try to access from the exrernal ip it says error. so i sent a message to a friend and i just got a response and he says that he can view it just fine using the external ip. (he's in chicago i'm in michigan) go figure.
Using the external ip address internally probably won't work (as woodshop said). You'll have to get someone on the outside world to test it for you. BTW, you only need to setup a NAT rule for port 80 if all your running is a http server (the other ports are for telnet, pop, smtp, ftp) Where do I sign my name
Welp, I still have to obtain the computer (proably going to get it tomorrow), so right now I'm trying to set things up on my main rig. And I don't have a dns service setup yet, but I did get my girlfriend to try and open my external ip, and no luck. The router is an older version of this (DI-604).
If your looking for a setup guide for a Linux Web server then look no further than the open source section http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=24980
The addy will proably be http://malfoleo.sytes.net I'm currently running the software on my main rig, if you can connect to that site, then I've got it setup right (btw, it'll only connect when this thing is turned on, so after a certain time, it obviously will be off )
Now just to figure out how to get ftping setup.... I'm guessing it would be allong the lines of ftp://malfoleo.sytes.net ???
seems to work can't get in though becouse i don't have a user name and password and anonymous login no work.
Glad you got it sorted , but what changed (in the config of the router). One moment it wasn't working, the next, it was...
Well, the reset didn't actualy reset the password (only the account name ) and so I was able to get access.... Anyway, I went into the "virtual server" part, used the ip rerouting bit to "point" to this computer, also did a few things in the NAT, and enabled FTPing. Things enabled: Virtual Server DNS port: UDP 53/53 Virtual Server HTTPS port: TCP 443/443 Virtual Server FTP port: TCP 21/21 Virtual Server HTTP port: TCP 80/80 Then had to go under the "firewall" bit and re-enable them there. Umm, question, would an old 486sx-66mzh work for a server? At least untill I got something better in place (300+mzh, 64+mb, 20+gig I'm thinking).
It won't be the fast server on the net, but it should do as a temp server. [edit]still planning to go down the windows/liteserve route?[/edit]
For now, yes I plan on using windows/liteserve. Simply because I don't know jack about linux. Once I can figure out how to setup a good linux install with user accounts, ftp, e-mail, space quotas, things like that, I'll switch over to linux. But allthough I do hate windows (simply because I've worked on so many windows computers), I can get it running like nothing else, so I'll stick with it for now.
Welp, I've got my server now Don't throw rocks at me though it's an older Dell (OptiPlex GXa). 300mhz intel pentium 2, 128mb ram, 40 gig brand new samsung hdd, 8x cd rom, 225 watt psu. It functions preatty good, only paid $100 for it (excluding the hdd and cdrom). But now I've got another problem, WTF SHOULD I PUT ON MY SITE?!?!?!?!?!
yea thats the hard part i could never think of anything so i just put some crap up that my family kept bugging me for. and now they don't. the plan worked.
I'm thinking of maybe starting a pron site, but I don't have enough naughty photos, nor any good looking models, and I don't even know where to get the age auth from! (btw, that was a joke) Am defianly going to do some webhosting for some people here on bit-tech, but aside from that, I don't know
