I say a celery 900 or so, or a older tbird (to save money).. 256mb of memory to play it safe, and Windows 2000.. You dont need 2000 server unless you want to create a domain.. its the only real difference.. :)

Thats a bit of overkill just for his home network, a 500mhz cpu will do with 128 mb (you may get away with 64mb) but obviously the more the better. Win 2k or linux as an o/s (XP is too resource hungry). But all this is subjective depending on your point of view what is acceptable performance.

really depends on what you want it to do....

i used to run everyhint throught one windows 2000 professional server:
dual celery 500, 128mb crucial, bla bla blah, and 40gigs off hdd space as i run it as a fileserver aswell....but then i got pissed of with windows firewalls....as it was my gateway aswell....

so then i split it into two: now ive got a celery 400 doing my firewall/gateway using linux and still got the win2k maching doing the fileserving and printer serving...

thus it depends really on what u wanna do with it....

im planning on having my print server a bottom end 2000 machine (with ud using spare cpu resorces) my router / firewalll will be a smoothwall box (but will have zonealarm on the machines, belt & braces aproach) & my media server will be a really high end machine as i want it to handle streaming media to my machines & be able to hold huge quantities of mpeg & mp3 files (as wellas run ud) & i will have a seperate file server (agiant a bottom end 2000 machine running UD when it in not in use)

(what can i say i also want to get my UD box count up as it is a very importiant cause)

sounds like a plan but how many machines do you plan on having..

with the streaming of media all you need is a fast network card...3com 10/100 server....a 100mbit switch to stop it from flooding your network...a fast hdd in the server and youre set...cpu and ram dont matter much....

well my plan is to have 1 web/mp3 box in the front room, a dedicated mp3 machine in my rack, a web terminal int he dining room a gaming machine in my room & my brothers room, a work machine (a couple of old laptops) & im planning on using a ide raid ) in the streaming server & why break the habit of a lifetime i already buy 3 com fast network cards anyway, the plan is to have a hell of a lto more than my network needs when it has finished so i can host lans & not have to upgrade the servers for a while

(as you can tell i never do anything by halves)

na this is a long term project, i may save myself some money by using my current (main) pc a duron 700, farely nippy (not overclocked) as one of the servers, do amd based machines make relaible servers as i may go for amd's in every machine (i ike amd but rarely seen in a server) im guessing it is because the pentium is better for data crunching & the amd is better for high end graphic work (am i right or jsut confused?)

it aint just that easy to say that the intel is better at number crunching and the amd better at graphics...hard to say but it really depends what you compare it to.

I run a P3 450Mhz with 256mb RAM and a 40gb IBM Deathstar :worried: and it is a file, print and part-time webserver. It copes easily with up to 8 clients accessing it and I often stream media from it. It also holds all of my mp3s for the clients to access. For my gateway/firewall I use a P166 with 32mb running smoothwall.

I like my P3 better than AMD because it runs super cool all 24/7 with a tiny super-quiet fan running at 3000rpm according to the bios.

what the land rover rad, well i can tell you it cooled my duron withouta fan as it is positioned on my bedroom wall inbetween the houses & it is a containt airtrap there, air is always moving & usually pretty fast, no pickkies unfortunately but i will be publishing a writeup & how it can be extended to cool serveral machines (perfect for servers) after my coursework is finished (not going to have studies an it degree for 2 years to fall @ this point)
