Damn Nexxo, you need to run for president/PM/whatever. You're way too smart and creative to not take over a country Very cool though. I personally just opt for the slightly more logical approach: fileserver, firehed-mbp (laptop), frozenfire, upstairs-dell, etc. Within those, the shares are of pretty logical names, so I can just samba in to \\fileserver\music or whatever. As I just broke the terabyte mark in the thing, I need to reorganize a bit, but I've always found that logic is the best approach, even if it doesn't sound anywhere near as cool as the Japanese names.
Bob and Roger on "Megatronics". Blame my brother for that one I wanted something Alice in wonderland. I'd vote for Nex.
i use elements from the periodic table for my boxs though i am currently rebuilding the entire network and i am going to start grouping stuff by the groups in the table tasks will be split by each group then the age of the machines will be determined by where on the column they are 18 will be networking equipment switches routers and wifi aps(will most likly be linked to ssids as well) 17 will be dev boxes including virtual machines 16 will be generic workstations 15 will be names for stuff that travels with me to lans 14 for gaming boxs 13 for laptops 2 will production virtual machines group 1 will be physical servers the rest will spread around where needed though i doubt i will need them until i get more lanning stuff
I just use a brief description of the machines. But then again I like it to be so that when someone else takes over they can understand it.
I Googled around a bit for traditional Japanese names (for babies) and Japanese deities. I already knew about Chi, Dao and Ebisu, so that gave me the idea. I would be tempted to name the servers etc. after Hindu deities --there are plenty: Gateway: Brahma - The Creator; this could be your gateway/proxy, from which everything springs; Admin: Ganesha - God of prosperity but also "Lord of all beings". This could be your admin server; File Server: Vishnu - The Maintainer; god of sustenance. This could be the file server; 2 Backup's + cluster Shiva - The Destroyer; married to Parvati, Goddess of perishable matter, who also manifests as Durga and Kali, the destroyers of evil and protectors of good. The first two could be your two backup servers and the latter two your cluster. They would be great for keeping emergency virus/malware scanners, and trouble-shooting/recovery software. The HTPC: Saraswati, goddess of literary knowledge, poetry, music and arts. Alternatively: Maya, goddess of illusion. Call your games machine Leela, goddess of playful nature. The rest could be named after one of the 10 avatars (manifestations) of Vishnu: Desktop 1 and 2: Rama (the perfect king) and Krishna (the enlightened prince); Laptop 1 and 2: Matsya (the Fish) and Kurma (the Tortoise) PDA 1 and 2: Garuna (king of the birds and messenger between gods and men) and Agni (manifest in fire and lightning, another messenger between gods and men) Call your UPS Shakti: the Divine Force, whithout who the gods have no power.
Nexxo... Man, if we ever meet, prepare to get seriously drunk on my expenses... Keep the ideas coming tough... Never enough server names...
As said before: brilliant naming there Nexxo. (call your server Nexxo? ) My setup: Laptop 1: Omron Laptop 2: Farore Fileserver: Nayru Workstation: Din Free cookie to the one that can guess where it's from. (Google is CHEATING, and you know it!) Htpc is temporarily named (gasp!): HTPC. (it's not finished, and it won't be for a long time either....)
Those names sound Zelda-ish. The only Zelda game I really remember is "Legend of Zelda" I'll hold off the cheating. Am I right?
/me waits for Nexxo to start an official fan club I really need to rename all my PCs, will1, will2, will3 etc gets kind of confusing.
That's why I'm still looking for good names... Something inside me tells me Nexxo isn't the only one that has such great inspiration...
my work place uses names of famous people begining with C, so Copernicus, Caesar etc...we are running out of names though....
