I use authors with a link to the machines function. So may laptop is 'kerouac' (On The Road), HTPC is 'orwell' (various aspects from 1984), etc.

State the type and purpose of the machine(s) or hard disk partitions and I will see what I can come up with. :D

Since I use the username BBQ on all my PC's, then my desktop would be BBQ@omgwtf and my server would be BBQ@charbroil and my p4 is BBQ@Weber

Sorry to point this out but Chi is not Japanese, it is a Chinese idea and is far removed from Ki.

Edit: In a martial arts perspective.

back in my pc days I used core names to name my computers, and whatever floated my boat for routers etc...

now that 4/6 of my machines are based on the same core(s) (yonah), I can't do that...

so I named them after type (macbook, imac, mini1, mini2, pro, work).... i really should come up with something more creative...

    but I'm lazy

not to mention then I'd have to factor in 4 AirPort Express base station names... (as of now: modem, livingroom, bedroom, kitchen)

Chi, like many Japanese philosophical and religious concepts, indeed has its origins in Chinese culture. However regardless of whether it is spelled Chi, Qi or Ki, the interpretation remains the same.

    Alright Nexxo, here goes:
    • Main PC use this for most everything right now. Has three monitors and will have a raid 0+1 setup soon.
    • Router (wrt54g with ddwrt linux)
    • Test box (P4 3.06) - used for testing stuff, usually linux
    • Media box - dual athlon mp 2000+, soon to have soft raid 5, 2x tv tuners
    • Xbox - running gentoox
    • Cisco PIX 501 - cisco firewall
    • backup server - dual p3 850, raid 1 250gb sata drives
    • spare/backup main rig - athlon xp 2000
    • linux router - pentium 233, 128 ram and a 2 gb hdd
    • p3 600 - irc server and general linux mischeif box
    • p3 500 - console rig - used for controlling other boxes and servers. hidden on my network and only plugged in and on when needed
    • toshiba PDA
    • laptop soon to come. might be the macbook pro, or an IBM lenovo. will dual/triple boot OS.
    • room mates wifi router - this lets my room mate connect to the internet without having to have access to my network.

    Think thats about it.

My Aikido sensei would answer me better than this as it is a particular pet hate of his, people putting Qi/Chi or Ki in the same group, but i will try.

Yes etymologically the word Ki has come from the Chinese chi, philosophically though it has not.
Ki was supposedly around far earlier than Chi in Japan. It was just un-named or the name is now lost as it was from the pre-literate era of Japan. Or the name was changed when japan took most of the Chinese written text.

Chi started in Chinese philosophy to determine the difference between living and non-living things. As Chinese philosophy developed over time Chi took on a much wider meaning.

Ki however has always been a physical force that is inside and can be manifested and used.

Japanese Ki is basically the Native Americans' Manitou. :)

Regardless, current interpretation of Ki is the same as that of Chi (keep in mind that both spellings are just Western phonetic interpretations of Kanji writing anyway).

Look, I'm sure that if we go way back in cultural history there are some subtle, deep, mystical philosophical differences that are inscrutible to my shallow and unenlightened Western mind, but we are just talking about naming a HDD partition here. It's not a biggie (no offence to your Sensei). :)

For security reasons, you could use random letters!
like "kjghas", "tzxucv", "kyusdf" and/or "qiozxwe"

Could be neet, but also very annoying. Perhaps use a number scheme that has different value for each digit or group of digits.
