I'm not sure if the XP cd key i'm using is being used by somebody else or just me, since I found the burnt CD in the basement somewhere. If it is already being used, would I be able to get a service pack, not be able to get a service pack, or would my copy of windows not work anymore?

If your copy on your PC is activated and passes the WGA you can download current updates and WMP11.

Service packs can be downloaded and installed regardless of whether its a legit copy or not.

Service Pack 2 (last time I used it) checks for WGA first. It worked for me since I am legit though.

You don't have a legal copy then.
