Well, my new 80gig drive arrived today to replace my dead 10gig I want to run a dual boot of 98 and 2k, 2k for day to day use and 98 for those old school games i still like ive seen a couple of guides and it looks straight forward, but will 98 have issues with my other NTFS formatted partitions? Also i got a USB laplink linky from ebuyer for some file transfer between my two computers. I was hoping i could share the internet connection over it too, a my main rig is connected to the uni network with a 10/100 card, and i only have one socket in the room. i havent found any reviews of it, and the instructions arent much help either. Will windows be able to figure it out for itself or will it require fiddling? (Yes im a n00b when it comes to networks) I did consider a switch/hub whatever (sorry dont know the correct term) but it wouldnt be worth it as im only here for another 2 weeks.
Decided to go ahead anyway, and have got 98 and 2k coexisting happily (or so it seems) However..... I followed Zaps excellent super partitioning guide, and have moved my program files and documents to separate partitons. But, i cant mount the program files partition as D:\Program files :S as it says access is denied. But theres no files in there, and ive altered the registry to point to the new drive. Ideas anyone???
Which OS are you trying to do this with? Can you see the D: drive from My Computer or Windows Explorer? As to your first question about NTFS partitions, Windows 98 cannot read from them, but Win 2K can read both NTFS and FAT32. This means you can see all your drives from 2K, but only the FAT32 ones when you're running 98. If you're running 98 when this error occurs, that would be the cause. If you're only using 98 for old school games, this won't be much of an issue, as long as you keep those games on the FAT32 partition. You can always convert the NTFS drives back to FAT32 if you're using a decent partitioning program. If you're running into this error when you're using Win2K, then I'm a bit stumped. I'd need to know a bit more info about how you're going about making these changes.
Trying to do this in 2k, and yes i can see D: drive. Im following Zapwizards super partioning guide. I have pointed the program files driectory to G: with TweakUI, its just i cant mount it as D:|Program files as in the guide. I dont think it makes too much of a difference anyway, i just wondered why it wouldnt let me do it! Regarding the other question, I was just worried that 98 would get confused about the NTFS partitons and maybe mess them up. The guides i read about it didnt mention what partition type they were using, and i was just a little scared of messing it all up (havent had much luck with computers recently ). It sems to be running all sweet atm.
Apologies for the double postage but a quick update: i still havent managed to mount the program files partition, but all the programs ive installed have used the correct path anyway so far, so im not too worried, same with the my documents too. Regarding the USB link, it wont let me share the network connection. Apparently a different cable is needed ( @ about £25 each :S) so for £5 im not moaning too much.
I got this same error too. I tried to follow the "super Partitioning" by ZapWizard. I'm running winXPsp1, and I'm logged in with admin rights. When I try to mount anything because I get the access denied error. Any ideas? Also, I changed the path for all the 'documents and setting folders using tweakUI and X-teq, but when I deleted them the original files, and then logged back in, I got an error at the login screen stating that files were missing and then I was auto logged into the default user account. Any ideas on this one? Thanks, D
Hmmm almost forgotten all about this one.... anyway, as my post further up indicates, after setting it up with xsetup/tweakui, it works ok. I havent managed to mount them, still get the same eror, but it works anyway. The only problem is with a handful of old programs using their own custom installers will usually try to install to C:/program files, but they always give you the option of changing that. As for the second bit, from memory, what i did was to create the new directories, copy the files, change the path in xsetup/tweakui, then change the registry to point at the new location. I only moved the program files & my documents however, and this was on 2k. It sounds like you havent altered the registry, I used a program to search and replace automatically, not at my pooter atm so dont know the name of it, will find out when i get back Think ill have to brush up on how to do this, be doing it all over again come christmas when my new mainboard arrives yay
where in the registry is the settings to tell XP where my new 'Documents and Settings' profiles are? Does anyone know how to get around the access denied error when trying to mount the NTFS drives? Thanks
