Having a noob moment, trying to sort a mates connection sharing over remote assistance (so can be slow) He has an O2 mobile broadband running on USB and he wants to share it through his ethernet to his xbox 360 but the connection sharing isn't working. If I let the computer assign the IP to the ethernet it shows "automatic private address" but gives a limited or no connectivity issue and no 360 connection. I assign a manual IP, the connectivity issue goes but the 360 is having issues connecting. Any tips?
You could give up and get a "MiFi": http://gizmodo.com/5256825/verizon-mifi-2200-3g-portable-wi+fi-hotspot-review They look pretty good - being able to share a 3G connection to 5 computers by WiFi is pretty good. I'm not sure about international availability though.
ICS is also a constant issue for me, as i need it for when i go online with the 360. The host PC (IIRC) - i.e. the one with teh USB modem/3g whatever blugged in needs to have a static IP. The guest PC should run dynamic, and need to pick up the same IP range as the host (i.e in the same 3-octats (word?) block). That means a reboot or two or a Start->run->cmd->ipconfig /renew or two might be required. ICS needs to be turned on on the conenction, and you will need to specify which connection can use it. The windows documentation (F1) on this is ok... not the most clearly explained, but i find myself referring back to it constantly and checking it out. It COULD also be that the firewall (windows one, for example) is blocking the guest PC. There's also PLENTY of documentation about running a 360 through ICS online, for example here
I think the roaming charges on that Verizon mifi would be huge over here! Trythe Three version instead: http://www.threemediacentre.co.uk/content/Detail.aspx?ReleaseID=420&NewsAreaID=2 Or you could get the Huawei D100 3g router, again from three: http://www.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/Huawei_D100_Router
