I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to share a wired (ethernet) network connection with an iPhone over Wifi? It seems to be possible using a Mac, but all other suggestions rely on using a router, which I don't have access to.

I have in the past bridged a wireless connection with wired, in order to let a computer without wireless connect to a wireless network, but essentially I am trying to do the opposite of that and it doesn't seem to be working.

What operating system are you using? Your sig shows a handmade system (most likely Windows) but you mention a Mac. In Windows XP, if the computer is connected to a wired network and the wireless interface is disconnected, then bridging the two connections will turn the computer into a wireless access point. However, it won't always work because some wireless drivers get confused. I tried this on my laptop once and it actually destroyed the wireless drivers, requiring me to reinstall them.

I am trying to do it using either Windows XP or Vista. I mentioned a Mac because i had found instructions how to do it with a Mac.

It seems that when I bridge the connections, it just kills everything until I un-bridge them. As I say, it has worked the other direction for me in the past which makes it all the more frustrating

The bridging of the conections should allow for the two ports to communicate in both directions and it should not cause any problems with them functioning if they were functioning before the bridging.

maybe try bridging then rebooting. Its windows, stupid things like that happen.

    hmm... thanks.

I think part of the problem may be the network I am trying to get it to "talk" to, though a friend has managed to get it working patchily.

ICS has always been patchy at best in my experience, but that's what you need in order to accomplish this.
