I always though it was opium addiction lol. Wonder if they'll have the Dr who idea of a single clue running through the entire series pointing to a huge finale. If its done sherlock style it will be a toughie to crack. Also Sherlock is very open to being down to the actor how to play the part. Hes such a huge character that most actors/scripts seem to focus on one part or aspect. An example would be the drug use aspect, or his attention to detail. It would take an entire series to cover all the small charistics of his character.
The adaptations Im referring to are the (~20 ?) serialised by the BBC, and can currently be heard from time to time on BBC7. They refer to the less celubrious side of his character at length, and frequently. Keep an eye open for them on iplayer, they are very very much worth a listen, Clive Merrison as SH and Michael Williams (briefly Andrew Sachs) as JW. My favourite example being in The Dying Detective when SH convinced JW that he had contracted a rare, terminal tropical disease and had the guy running round london conducting his 'Dying Wish'. There is a great amout of narcissism and a deal of the macabre etc concerning SH in the books, Id like a drama starting at 9pm to not shy away from that
I doubt there would have been so much mention of psychopathy and sociopathy if they weren't planning to explore SH's darker side in the next installments. Besides, House and Wilson have stuffed the drugs part of SH down everyone's throats for years now (not that I don't LOVE that show), they were probably wise not to concentrate on it too much.
I enjoyed the first hour of it, but as I haven't read "a study in scarlet" the last 1/2 hour just made me think of vizzini in the princess bride, and the trial of intelligence. I kept on expecting someone to shout "inconceivable"
I read a few of the books, but they may have been children's adaptations Quite a few years ago. One where he guessed he was digging under a bank/similar because he saw dirt on the guy's knees when he answered the door? So I'm not that into what he should be like, more into good TV, and he did come across as arrogant to me. I'm going to keep watching it anyway
I watched this last night, thought it was excellent. Thought the camera work was really good too. "turn away Anderson, I can't concentrate with your face looking at me" lol
What Toka's trying to say is that he comes across as arrogant because he was written that way by Conan Doyle. In Sherlock's mind, he is a genius, and he looks down on everyone else because they're not as intelligent as he is. He gets annoyed at others (especially Lestrade)because they can't see (or miss) what is patently obvious to him. It's also why, in later stories, he almost throws himself at Moriarty because he finally meets someone whose intellect is a match for his own, someone who he can finally relate to. If they weren't arch-enemies, they'd probably be lovers - there's something quite narcissistic in the relationship between Holmes & Moriarty.
Watched it yesterday and found it brilliant. I love the way they've taken Holmes into the 21st century, and I really enjoyed the guy playing Holmes (I'm not all that familiar with british actors I'm sorry to say).
SH's next case: Times are different this week. Sun 1 Aug 2010 20:30 BBC One Sun 1 Aug 2010 21:30 BBC HD Aaannnd: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s129/sherlock/news/a252134/bbc-to-stick-with-sherlock.html So we should get more after this run.
Watched it on iplayer absolutely loved it, I hope it does get a full series, but usually everything i like gets axed
I saw the first episode and really enjoyed it. The only problem for me is Sherlock is nothing like the old tv show, he's far too intelligent. Like that crap he says to Watson after he borrows his phone. Kind of Overkill to the character. Never the less I'll watch a few more episodes and see what I think.
Really liked the first episode, looking forward to todays episode. I really hope they turn this into a series like Dr Who, which by the way is what Sherlock reminds me a lot of.
That was a good episode. I wish they'd make the encryption hidden message things a bit harder though. Hidden Message 2 Spoiler Split the message into a grid 5*5 SOMNE HCCGT EKOTY RIMOO LAIGU Read down the columns: "SHERLOCK I AM COMING TO GET YOU" I really enjoy challenges like these, but damn i wish they were more of a challenge.
Really enjoyed the first ep, going to download and watch the rest now. I was massively skeptical when I realised it was a modern adaptation. (Oh, did anyone else have a durp when it first started and think they were watching the wrong programme for about a minute with all that random war footage?) They handle the integration of technology into Holmes' character and methods very well. And Mark Gatiss was awesome. Though in my mind he's kind of typecast as the evil butcher, so when he showed up in this I didn't think "Oh, a mysterious villain", I thought "Oh, the evil butcher has turned up."
