I played Mass Effect few months ago and restarted it just now, but when trying to shoot enemies I might as well be using a pea shooter, nothing seems to hit and at point blank range it's seemingly doing little to no damage to enemies.

I am in the Artemis Tau cluster doing a side mission and I just cant seem to hit any enemies on foot (in vehicle i hav no problem), it takes an absolute age just to put down 1 enemy, whereas they seem to be hitting me and damaging me pretty easily.

Is there something I am missing?

That sounds like the first two Brothers In Arms games.

With those games I'm guessing your own weapons were deliberately made weak so you would be forced to correctly use your squads to Find, Fix, Flank and Finish.

I'm not sure if that works quite the same in Mass Effect though.

Are you using a weapon you're specialized in? Mass Effect was always a bugger for giving you weapons you couldn't use, then not really telling you.

Yep, you need to be trained in specific weapon types to get the best out of them plus you should pay attention to the ammo type your have loaded.
For example don't waste your time with anti personnel rounds if you're fighting the Geth or other robotic/cybernetic opponents, you need to make sure you use the right type of ammo for the enemy you face. Weapon mods can help as well if any character stats are a bit weak.
I recall making sure I had really good stats in one weapon type before I started to use other weapon types, my personal choice was assault rifles but shotguns are pretty effective when dealing with organics, especially with high level anti personnel ammo. I can't recall the ammo type I used but I do remember that with the right combo of ammo & mods I could just mow down the regular Geth, the bigger and meaner ones took a bit of concentrated fire from a couple of characters but they did go down.

And for me, pistols seemed like a waste of upgrade points.

nah, pistols and shotguns was the way to go as a vanguard, really depends on the class you are.

Ah i see, I will have a look and see tomorrow after work on those points. im pretty certain i specialized in rifles because thats all i would mostly use.

I have a feeling I may have not used some points. Maybe I have weaker weapons than i should have at this stage

Also if you're playing on hard and above the will take an incredible amount of damage to put down due to nearly every enemy gaining the immunity ability.

I didn't use anything else through the entire game.

In ME2, anything that wasn't seriously close quarter, sniper rifle through the whole game.

The first time I played ME 1 the weak, almost useless guns on the first mission made me stop playing for months before I bothered to go back and play the game through. Having finished it I can't believe I did such a thing to such an epic game.

I was also extremely frustrated with the shooting in ME when I first played it. The weapons were horribly inaccurate, sounded terrible, and it didn't play like any other shooter I've ever tried. It wasn't until I got much better in my Assault Rifle skill and actually started getting weapons worth a damn that I started to like the shooting. The sniper rifles were still always useless to me though. As were the shotguns. It was almost a full 180 in ME where I passed one wall and suddenly my assault rifle became awesome. Until that point I just relied on the Soldier power Adrenaline Rush or whatever it's called.

And like a previous poster, in ME2 I used the sniper rifle through the whole game.

Assault Rifles in ME1, I'd rather throw rocks, they'd do more damage too

It's all down to the class - if you're like me and don't bother with all the faggy wizards and stuff, go for Soldier and grab assault rifles and sniper rifles for excellent levels of kickass.

    Otherwise, pistols+shotties. :D

I played it through recently and can say I found none of that. It must be just using the right gun for the type of player.

The only thing that put off at first was the environments being so constrictive.

To be honest I haven't bothered with assault rifles. I started playing last week and restarted as Adept on Saturday, simply because the Jedi powers are so good. Between lift + throw + pistols, everything's dead.

I played through ME 1 as a Infiltrator so I never really found my weapons to be to weak. Its probs a early game thing. Towards the end I was destroying everything in sight within seconds with my squad. Then again I only played it on normal.
