I want to shorten the cables on my PSU for a custom case I'm working on.

I have no problem in shortening the cables with the molex connectors but am not too sure about the ATX power lead. Do I have to simply chop the wires and soldier/heatshrink them or can I rewire the connector or obtain a new connector from anywhere, in the UK of course.

Also, what about the extra 12v leads - can I remove these somehow ? as I do not plan on using them or could I chop them off short and heatshrink the ends.

Has anyone done anything similar ?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

    Cheers, CC

PS: If this should go in the electronics forum then please feel free to move it - thanx.

Many thanx lazy - it's the 350w version of that very same PSU I want to mod - I suggest you take a nice long nap as a reward :D

Macroman, if you read this. Are you still using the PSU and have you had any trouble with ? also did you do anything special with the extra 12v leads ?

No problems with the supply. I left the extra cables. I have no use for then right now but may do in the future.

Since I had my PS apart already to paint it, I pulled the unused cables (I'm using all my regular molex's, but the P4 power and stuff like that) back inside the supply. I ziptied them all together and it's spiffy now.

I'm not sure if that is what you are trying, since you're chopping stuff up you'll have already voided the warranty, might want to see if that is an option.

    That's good to hear macroman.

Thanx essjaytee, but I have removed the PSU from it's housing and don't plan on putting it back. You see it's to go in a custom plexi/alu case I've made and space is a major issue.

I think I'll just shorten the two 12v leads to about an inch, then I can allways lenghten them if needed.

I'll give it a go at the weekend and see what happens :D
