Modding Shortening Temp Sensor ?

    My motherboard came with one of them long cables with 2 pins on 1 end and a temperature probe on the other. My question is can i shorted it to say about 3/4cm just so it monitors case temperature ? Its just standard 2 core wire so u think i can just chop it solder it and add a little heatshrink ?
