    let me set the scene.

    First of all i am with talktalk for my internet (no snide comments please, its the only provider i can go with) and they have sent me the worst router in the world ever, DLink DSL-2780. I've tried opening ports so that i can play games better (as it blocks certian things) it never keeps them open.

    my question is would i be better off with a better router, something from netgear?

    Also the MTU is is hovering around 1432, is there any way i could increase that or would i not be able to?

    would an N series 300Mbps be better than than an N series 150Mbps and would this help my web viewing pleasure and general conection?

    thanks

    Andy

    I use talktalk and, while I hardly get good download speeds (my line is capped at 7.5mb and there is no cable underneath my house), I get superb pings and have never had any issue gaming online with them, and I game ALOT on cod and other online fps.

    I dont, however, use the router they provided (which was like over 5 years ago). I use a D-Link one I bought in order to open the ports for Live. I connect both my xbox and pc using homeplugs to the router (although gaming wirelessly worked fine for me).

    I would say get a decent wireless n router but connect via ethernet either with a long cat5 cable or through homeplug adapters, that way you avoid any issues wireless may bring (like if your wireless channel is congested you may get random lag spikes etc). However, the quality of your line will make the biggest difference, and opening up your ports so that it can properly handle gaming traffic.

    I personally use this router although it is outdated now, but I haven't upgraded to n seeing as I don't use the wireless that much. But I can change all those settings on the left, and port forward the necessary ports for Live.

    Best router I've ever owned is the Netgear DGND3300.

    Still have it in a box somewhere but not suitable for Cable, only ADSL (a la TalkTalk)

    Excellent sync rates given the lines it's been on, easily tweakable via DMT Tool, many options, custom firmwares available, very stable, handles a plethora of multiple simultaneous TCP / UDP connections easily (i.e torrenting), and has a dual band wireless to boot.

    Excellent piece of kit, much better than the more recent ADSL kit they've released. Gets my vote full on!

    the wife uses her (my old rig) pc upstair in our bedroom and uses wireless for her connection , as the router is downstairs in the front room (currently less than 3m away from the pc) hard wired is the best option for me, so would the DGND3300 as you ugested be the best option for me to get?

    only problem is it is £85 on scan, and i am on the dole lol

    I have had many routers in the past - netgear and d-link - and to be honest i never liked the d-links
