    Should I?

It's an LG Optimus GT540 and to be honest the most recent update from LG (2.1) has ballsed it up and I can't upgrade to any newer firmware.

It's pretty easy to root this phone and I wondering if anyone else has had any experience doing it with this phone.

    What do you think?

I've rooted my orange san francisco, and it doesn't bring too many benefits, apart from easy orbot use.

I've not rooted my Desire but i've heard it's pretty easy to do and as long as you take your time and read the guides it's pretty risk free.

Check out androidforums.com and see if theres a sub-forum for your phone as there are usually rooting guides there. Alternatively check out xda-developers because they definitely have rooting guides as well as the custom roms.

I rooted my HTC and have friends that have rooted Samsung S and ASUS Transformer. My phone had so much more in it that won't have been there if I left it on Sense OS (overclocking, less force closes) so I would say you should root you phone to unlock its full potential as a smartphone.

Also in agreement with the above guys, CM7 is IMO the best custom rom that is available for many android phones right now.

I rooted my Droid 2 and it was super easy. Worth while if you want more out of your phone.

CM7 won't work on my phone. That's one of my big issues stopping me from doing it.

Well, my HD2 is now running Android, it's pretty. It's worth it. Going from WinMo 6.5 to Android is awesome, so many apps. And things actually work. Windows Marketplace is a joke, shite apps for an absurd price.

    I'd certainly root it

I had a old HTC Touch which I refreshed on a regular basis with a new custom rom
3 years later I was using the same phone with the latest windows mobile OS available at the time

Certainly. Aside from voiding your warranty, it's practically a risk free process. Check out XDA and MoDaCo if you need any help or tips.

    Hope this helps :)

Personally I'd not bother with MoDaCo myself. The community is not what it used to be and forums for less popular phones are pretty dead. Also Paul is trying to develop for far too many phones at once so updates are thin on the ground if you go for a MoDaCo ROM - back in the HTC Hero's hayday he upset the community he had when he left everyone hanging with regards to updates. Also paying for add free/membership so you get access to the kitchens is not worth it. For the last reason - no guarenteed updates.

XDA however is a much better community resource.

Wish I could root my HTC, unfortunately it's had the OTA update that locks the bootloader :sigh:

I'd say go for it! I think the days of rooting and installing custom ROMS being something akin to the Dark Arts is now long gone. Alot of ROMs now come with their own installers and rooters making the process much easier than it used to be. Just make sure you follow the instructions TO THE LETTER - it's when you try and do shortcuts that things tend to go wrong.

Yes, this is very important. If you don't understand something, ask before you do anything.

It may be true that updates are fewer, but for my phone (ZTE Blade/Orange San Francisco), there is a fraction of the activity on XDA compared to MoDaCo. I have access to the kitchens anyway because I'm on the MoDaCo dev team [slight bias :p ] ;)
