I currently run an AMD 2500+ Barton
A Radeon Sapphire X800 pro toxic AGP card
    1 Gig Ram
    Asus A7N8X-X Board

The system is used mainly for games

Should I make the jump to AMD 64 3200+ with a new Epox EP-9NDA3+ nForce3 Ultra Motherboard, or should I wait and overclock what I currently have. Any Help please would be appreciated.

    Thanks Geoff

I think you'd see a nice speed boost from that hardware, and if you consider how well the 3200+ Venices overclock... :)

Agree with above, but I think you should just save up and play the waiting game for about 1-2months.
That way, you can upgrade the CPU/MOBO/GFX, and by then prices will have come down. :)
Just what I'd do though tbh.

The problem is that you can play that game forever... there shouldn't be any significant price drops that I can think of other than graphics, as Presler and Cedar Mill aren't due for a while and they aren't really competition for the Athlon series in the first place. It doesn't appear that you want to upgrade graphics , so I'd just put my foot down and go for it :)

AMD 64 beats XP by miles, its a bit like asking whether a P4 is better than a P3. I suggest going for PCI-e if you have the money. But with £200 you can't really get that, you will see a notible improvement in playing Doom3, but with a £200 budget, you can't play the game at the highest quality.

As for waiting, well, if you could save more money that would be better, prices will come down in a few months, but you won't save a huge amount!

I'd go for the upgrade now.

You have a AGP card and want a venice Athlon 64 so get a ASRock 939 Dual SATA2 board. It has the best AGP perfomance of any 939 motherboard so i've read. It also has a PCI-E slot so you don't have to worry about another new motherboard when you want a new card. And of course has SATA2 support.
It's a pretty good board for overclocking too, as many are finding out :D

Best of all tho is the price. I've seen nowhere that charges over £50 for one :thumb:

I've just bought one. And with my new £80 incl VAT Venice 3000 i've made the jump from a 3000 Barton.
My plunge into 64-bit - under £130 (well plus £25 for a gigabyte 3d cooler pro :p ) so for your £200 you could go for a better cpu and clock it some.

Don't play the waiting game. Your just denying yourself now! Sure you can save a few quid by waiting a few months but then you could save youself a few more quid by waiting a few more months.....
    Live in the now
