Yes, the MPI board is documented completely. The question is if you have the pin-layout of your LCD....

Yes, like this i think (actually routed it back to a SED1351, but i can't get that interfaced to a pc. :waah: )
    1 >YD
    2 >LP
    3 >XSCL
    4 >WF
    5 >v- contrast -20v to -15v (measured)
    6 >V+ +5v (mesured)
    7 >GND
    8 >V- -22,2v (measured)
    9 >UD0
    10 >UD1
    11 >UD2
    12 >UD3
    13 >LD0
    14 >LD1
    15 >LD2
    16 >LD3
    17 >NC
    18 >NC

well that was the name on the pins on the controller..
I'v got the inverter for the backlight and the PSU for the -20V

you could interface the SED1351 to a PC using via the LPT using 3 latches.

Firstly may i say to you Coorz, that u are a genius, but i suspect u know that already....lol...and without sounding like a suck, how is this connected to the pc- by parallel or usb?
I have found one on ebay exactly the same but i think it may be too far out of my league to get it to work.

Ok, kind words but i'm not a genius. Though i tend to hang out a lot with some :)
I have to make a small confession about this display though. As stunning as the screens appear to be in the pix, there is one serious problem with the SED1335 controller that can't be solved easily; it manifests a lot of screen corruption when displaying lots of action (LiquidMP3).
So take that into account if you decide to have a go at it, still it is absolutely the most beautiful display i've ever seen.
There are other controllers that will be able to drive it perfectly smooth, but then again those controllers aren't supported by any of the regular LCD apps.

Thanks for that Coorz, i have made my mind up now, i will give it a big miss, i have a 20X4 LCD that i use with Smartie that works fine apart from an occaisional IO port hiccup.
I guess that with the exchange rate and postage from the States, i would be better off just getting a MatrixOrbital.
Your display is a damn fine piece of electronic wizardry. :thumb:

Just stroll around on e-bay and look for a graphical LCD with onboard controller. They are listed regularly.

Any ideas where to find one of these displays?

I did an eBay search with no luck. Lot's of expired eBay listings show up when I do a Google, so it looks like you've all probably bought them up already... If anyone has any pointers, I'd love to have one. Reply here or email me at mike [at] dawgdayz.com.

    Thanks!

Ebay has been a weee bit scarce on that one. Ive been keeping tabs on it.I havent been too crazy about what people drive the bids up to, so I havent gotten one yet. But now they are fairly hard to find.

    Sure you didn't...

Yeah, yeah.... I've heard it before... :hehe:

    Oh well...

Anyway, I just noticed that earlier in the thread you mentioned that this isn't backlit. My intended purpose is as a car pc interface. Do you think that this would be appropriate, or is it to dark? And do you have any other suggestions for a reasonably priced interface if this isn't appropriate?

    Thanks!
    Mike

    Edit:
D'oh! Of course it doesn't have a backlight... It's electroluminescent... it doesn't need one. Anyway, suggestions for alternatives are still appreciated.

a VFD or an LCD with a specific viewing angle might be good for car use.
I've also seen graphical OLED LCD's but only in smallish 128x64 size. In my Peugot 307 i have an amber graphical (240x64?) LCD status screen, very good visible under all circumstances, so an LCD should be well possible.

Yeah, that's probably what I'll go with. I'm still toyng with the idea of just using a Lilliput 7" touchscreen, but I kind of like the idea of a completly custom interface. If I use a VFD or LCD, it will be the sole front-end, with homemade controls. For my purposes (primarily mp3 & obdII (On Board Diagnostics)), I expect that a 128 * 64 would be just sufficient, though a larger display would be preferable. I've got a Noritake 128x32 VFD on order off of eBay to play with... If I'm happy with that, I'll try to track down a larger one. I can always add the Lilliput later if I want.

I also saw these LCDs which look nice, and the price is certainly right, but I'm not certain what would be involved in wiring one up. Any pointers would be appreciated. A Simmetry touchscreen LCD is still under consideration as well, though I wish they were larger...
