I recently built a budget server using a mix of new and old parts. My old problem with it is that the hard drives are old, and so they are extremely loud. I dont really want to spend money for enclosures or the liking, so I was wondering if there was any home-made fixes I could do. Thanks.
If those disks are 5400rpm and don't get too hot, you might be able to fit them inside an old cd-rom drive. Just screw open the drive, empty it, put some foam (forgot the name of that stuff) inside, put the disk inside, a new layer of foam on top, close it, and voila! I bet this is just one of many options
Fold some paper like an acordian(sp) and put it on the sides and under, over, any where you can fit it. works for me
use thick rubber bands and suspnd them in the air instead of using screws. Kind of, wind the bands through the screw holes and all around the the drives. and vibrations are absorbed and wont rattle the case
The downside to some of the suggestions above is that it wouldn't look very neat if you had a window.
yes, but how often can you clearly see the insides of yor drive cages without standing at an odd angle to the case
I'm thinking about using rubber washers to silence the cage, but this still leaves the fact that I can hear the platters spin, and everyonce in a while I can hear the read/write heads doing their business.
Someone on this forum (can't remember who) made an aluminium cover which could hold a HDD sandwiched between two thick sheets of foam rubber (not plastic, that could carry static). Sort of a home-made version of the QuietPC SilentDrive. Try that?
