Hello everybody, this is my first thread on this awesome site. I'm italian, so exscuse me if I don't write English so good. I'm nineteen years old and now I want to show you my mod. The name of the mod is Silicium and he's partecipating to Mod'N'Roll 2012 competition. Look at this little picture (a sort of project) I'm going to up other pictures about my work. See you soon, stay tuned
These are spheres of polystyrene that will be the principal structure of the "case" Yesterday I cut one sphere and I insered the optical drive into her. This is the result: The free spaces will be covered whit some plexiglass.
I changed the hardware purchasing a mini-itx mb (17x17cm) AM3. Meanwhile, I prepared the base plate of the motherboard deriving it from an old case. Here are the new arrivals The larger sphere is 30cm, the other from 20. Then I got 2GB of DDR3 and the rest will come later.
I think I found a good solution to mount the power supply and the motherboard in the central sphere. In this picture I show you the case of the power supply with mounted above some pins stolen from an old vga
I only did some work with the resin. I started with the central sphere. I covered with parcel tape and have spread within three pieces of glass fiber cross between their brushing them with the resin.
Here are some pictures to give you an idea of what will come out. In this picture there isn't the base of my mod. The tubes that you see have a diameter of 4cm.
Here are some up to show you that I'm covering a hemisphere of fiberglass. For now I'm trying, I hope to be good. I covered the hemisphere with a sheet of fiberglass and now I have stretched a little to the fiberglass filler to smooth the surface, and then paint it.
Today I continued to cover the fiberglass and the other half of the ball and rub each other. Meanwhile I did some tests to decide how to place the ball. Unfortunately it is all a bit wrong because the pipes are not fixed so they move constantly. But at least I got an idea. It seems to me that we need more distance between the spheres. What do you think?
This is the support for hdd 2.5". I do not know where the piece of plastic comes from, I found it in my garage. That green rubber is to reduce vibrations and i got them from the inside of an old cd player.
Here is the first hemisphere. The result is still not good, it seems that the sphere has cellulite I'm using to close the tiny holes that are a lot of white glue mixed with talcum and a few drops of water.
Here are a few up Today I mounted the plate resting on the power supply mb card to see that everything was in place And, what is this??
Today I searched into the drawers something that I can use to block the tubes. I want something that blocks the tube inside and outside otherwise the excessive weight would collapse. And here is what I found, the effect does not seem bad but still did not convince me at all
I continued to fill the balls and now I miss a little ball and the big one. Meanwhile, I prepared a kind of grid to let the air out from the last ball, one at the top. The grid will be completed after grouting and do not see why it is on the back of the ball.
Wow, this is very unusual! Props for having the balls (haha) for doing something like this I'm keeping my eye on this one
