I've had this 8700K sat in a drawer for ages, waiting as a probably pointless little upgrade to my i5 8400 which I would then pass down to my plex box. Today was the day I finally decided to do it and it's not gone particularly well.

At first it just wouldn't post, but after swapping it another 4 times I realised I'd just knocked a stick of RAM out of line.

It's now running but the temperatures, while I expected a little higher, are wayyy higher.

I have an NZXT Z73 and I've always run it on the "silent" profile. Coupled with the graphics card I have which spins down its fans when not needed, my PC makes near to no noise most of the time. The i5 8400 would sit at around 40 in normal use.

The 8700K has hit 100 more times than I'm comfortable with, and seems to be idling at 60+.

Basically, is this just normal? It is after all a 95W part as opposed to the 65W chip I had before.
I've repasted it three times. The Z73 should be man enough for 95W, right? The liquid temp is 29 so I feel like it's just not getting the heat away from the chip, but the contact is good (judging from the squashed paste).

I wonder if there's a chance the spreader isn't making good contact? My i5 was de-lidded by someone braver than me, but I have always run that with the lid put back on with a bit of arctic silver in between (dodgy?)

Had a similar issue on a 7700K that had been badly delidded previously. I'm not brave enough to tackle such things so I used this service on ebay and it knocked 20-odd degrees off and brought all the core temps much closer together, would highly recommend them.

I'd be looking at whether the pump is running properly.

Typically, just after asking for help it seems to have settled itself down. Occasional spikes to 70s as the clock jumps around. Idling around 40-45. Maybe I'd just got some air bubbles from moving it around or summat daft like that.
