The only problem with using a knob like that is that they're usually marked down one edge because they're normally used with variable resistors. The rotary encoder doesn't need a mark down the side since it spins round forever. However I don't think I'm going to have much choice and I think I have one of these knobs laying about somewhere. Thanks
All this sounds similar to the stuff that Bsodmike has been doing for me: ... a PIC controlled flow-switch monitor (with PC shutdown) for watercooling, with integrated throbber for the power LED (the LED is blue, but it turns red in case of pump failure, and the circuit initiates PC shutdown). All these circuits are really impressive. I think people should look at getting them commercially produced by some of the modding shops out there. FrozenCPU has shown some interest in this one...
you could also go to a local mechanics shop that have a lathe (SP?) and get one made.. shouldn't cost much... mabye make one in plastic and dye it... or get one made in aluminum made and get it anodised... or mabye paint it...
Read somewhere about someone hacking up one of those toilet cleaning brushes with an acrylic shaft. /Mail coming up!
Damn! Why didn't I think of that before! Unfortunately I've cut the piece of acrylic for the front panel with a hole for a bigger knob so I can't do that now. Should have an update with the front panel ready for tommorow.
hmm have you ever considered writing a guide for this mod? that would be awesome (mainly to help me ) and yes its an awesome mod, and i really like the black/white color scheme these knobs on my comp are pissing me off
Nice work. Started work on a fan/lights controller with an LCD a while ago myself, never had the time to finish it though. What language do you program in? You a hardcore ASM'er or use something else?
I probably won't write a guide for this (at the moment anyway) as it really requires knowledge of programming PIC's, and if you know how to use a PIC it should be reasonably straightforward to create this yourself. Hardcore ASM'er naturally
I created the front panel thing today. I used a piece of polycarbonate, and painted the rear side with black paint. I'm not sure if I like it or not though. I think it maybe looks a little too plain. What do you guys think?
yea the front panel is pretty good but i think it would look at lot less plain (and a lot better) if it only took up 1 drive bay, perhaps you can do a bit more modding to make it all fit
And use a blank drive cover for the spare bay? The PCB is too large to use something in the bay underneath, but I should be able to get it to appear like it was only in one drive bay.
Will try this tommorow then and see how it looks. I think this thread should now be moved to Project Logs.
gorgeous - have just been lurking for a month or so cos am busy with uni, but had to post on this one! would like to see more white light - looks great.
Hi guys. I created a panel for a single drive bay and in my opinion it looks a lot better now Here's the pics! Let me know what you think!
