Hi everyone, had a quick look for a thread, so I apologise if I missed it. My Hipertec PSU is ancient and I think a lot of people would describe it as "Pants"at best. So with Xmas coming I will add a new PSU to the list for parents in laws etc. Question is though is it better to have a PSU with a single 12v rail or multiple 12v rails. What do people think? I think 750w should be ample
I don't believe it really matters. The most important thing is if its a good brand, hence being well designed and won't blow up, . I suppose some of it depends on what your going to connect and how it'll connect.
As above; it shouldn't matter much if it is a good quality power supply. In saying that a single rail is the most desirable. This avoids the issue of spreading the load evenly between rails. The trend is towards a single, high-current 12V rail in the more recent releases from Corsair and Seasonic etc.
TECHNICALLY Speaking: - Multi-rail can have a power protection system per rail that is SUPPOSED to stabilize better the current, and prevent your whole computer from breaking.. just some rails, if something reaaallly bad happens, like lighting hitting your electric wires. However you are limited in the rail power.. so you have to plan what goes where. - Single rail provide full power, no limitation per rail (well up to the max capacity of your PSU). Good power supplies, rails or multi-rails both features several type of power protection systems, to deliver clean, stable power, and protects against over power damages. So it comes down to all the same point. As in reality you will never plug a 2x GPU SLI and several HDD's from the same electrical cable (which is not possible, in any case) you have nothing to worry about multi-rail setup.
