According to sources, SIS are making inroads into the AMD chipset market and will increase its efforts by releasing a number of PCI Express (PCIe) chipsets for the Athlon 64 platform, this will begin in November.

SIS claims that they rank second in market share in both the AMD and Intel chipset market - its goal is to become the biggest producer of chipsets for AMD platforms. Currently, VIA are the market leaders in the AMD K8 market with NVIDIA close behind.

According to SIS, their revenues are expected to grow by 10% during September due to increased sales of K8 chipsets in the OEM marketplace.

In November, SIS will begin to produce its first PCI-Express northbridge, the SIS761, which is said to feature a single PCI-Express x16 lane. The SIS761GX, which is a version that includes an integrated graphics processor, will appear in the first quarter of 2005. They will also introduce two more integrated parts in the first half of next year, the SIS770 and 756FX, which will appear in volume in the 3rd quarter.

Both the SIS761GX and SIS756FX will feature the SIS Mirage1 graphics processor, which has support for DirectX 7.0, while the SIS 770 northbridge will use the Mirage3 graphics-processing unit, which supports DirectX 9.0.

According to SIS, the later SIS756FX northbridge will also include support for two PCI-Express graphics cards - full details of the number of PCIe lanes is not available at the moment, but we expect it to feature a single x16 slot and a second x16 slot with only 8 lanes. In addition to the obvious support for NVIDIA's upcoming Scalable Link Interface solution, the company claims that it is developing a solution to adopt ATI PCI-Express graphics cards as well.

The PCI-Express northbridges will be accompanied with the SIS 965 I/O controller, or southbridge. This chip features support for two PCI-Express x1 slots, integrated RAID, Gigabit Ethernet and also 4 SATA ports.

SIS' November launch of its PCI-Express enabled chipsets will come one month after VIA begins volume production of its VIA K8T890 chipset. Both NVIDIA and ATI have upcoming solutions too, which will both be released before the end of the year.
