Once again...it´s time for our next worklog....

Like our Friends Ironknocker and Abbas-It we´re also taking part in the We-Mod-It CE-Modding Contest.:thumb:

It´s hosted on our German Forum and instead of PC Cases we´re building Cases for External Hard Drives.:D

The Contest is supported by Angelbird, MS-Tech and Aquatuning, so we got a nice package with that we could start our projects.

The Package contains an Angelbird SSD & an external 2,5" Hard Drive Case by MS-Tech, both should be used in the Projects.

After a bit of brainstorming we decided that we would hook on a Star Wars themed build this time, the only longer discussion was:

"Which Side ?" Dark or Light....

but we finally went onto the Dark Side....

So we will built a small Sith Holocron which will contain our SSD and the PCB of the external Case.

Beside that we´re planning to integrate a few LEDs, maybe an Arduino and the one or other Gadget....but we will see that later.....

Let´s Start with the first sketches we made....(they were made before we decided which Side we choose and they ´re really just quick sketches of the raw concepts)....

    Then our Hardware Package arrived....

After our Decision for the Dark Side we planned that we maybe build 2 versions....depending on the results of the Prototype.

So we first cutted a bottom plate for our Prototype....

then we cutted out the 4 Sides of the Pyramid....

as next we created a Prototype from the prepared parts and a few short plexiglas rods....

we also prepared a few smaller parts which will be needed later on in the building process...

Beside that we cutted out the next "triangle" from clear acrylic, after cutting it out, we engraved a few Sith Symbols which will be enlighted when everything is done.....

And last but not least, we made a first test of the integrated electronics and the "Holodisplay"....

    Time for an Update!! :thumb:

Like you could imagine....we already continued the work on this tiny build.....

After preparing the clear plexiglas layers with the engraving we glued them together with the black parts....so that we could make the next steps on both pieces at the same time....

We also prepared a few smaller parts which will be needed later....

In the time the glue needs to dry we prepared a few clear plexi rods, which we then glued onto the sides of 2 of the black pieces....and after the next drying period we put together the first 3 sides of the Pyramid....

The last part will be added after we completed the work on the inside....because that way its much easier to access the inside....

As next we prepared the bottom plate and the "Hardware" for our Holocron.
We put them loose in place, just to see in which direction and how exactly we´re going to mount both parts....

It looks a bit messy, but it has it´s sense, because in that angle of the phone we could optimize the output of our Hologram. So as next we´re going to mount all parts in their positions....

So with the exact positions of the parts in mind, we started to prepare the next small parts....like an extension for one of the phone buttons....

(The tube will be glued to the bottom plate, the plexi rod lays loose in the tube and is only fixed by that small black plexi part so that it couldn´t slide out of the tube....)

Then we overworked the edge of the bottom plate so that it fits inside the pyramid....

And last but not least we had to modify the length of the LED which is mounted on the pcb for the external drive connector....

Wow! Im so glad i found this work log, and good that you chose the Dark side. Im a hugh Star wars, especially Sith-fan. I love the Darth Bane-books including lots of holocrons. Ive always wanted to do a Holocron mod, and some time i will do it. :D Love how this is taking shape, good job!

    thx m8!!

    Update time:

After finding the exact position of the SSD we continued our work with a small opening for the mini usb port, so that it is accessible from the outside....

after that we prepared a first part of a mid plate....

and as soon as it fits in its position, we cutted out a small slot for the arm of a mini servo...

We will use the servo to controll the phone, so that we´re able to navigate through the menu to the videofile we want to use

After that we prepared the second part of the midplate....

Ok, it´s time to finish this little build...:thumb:

We already prepared the second part of the mid plate....so we continued the work on it and cutted out a small rectangle for the display....

After that we build the top piece for the pyramid....

Then we started to mount the SSD and the PCB on the bottom plate (both got countersinked screw holes from the bottom....so that the parts are easy accessable....

As next we tried a few positions for the Arduino and finally decided that we won´t mount it on the bottom plate....instead of that we added it to the upper part...that way we have all the electronic components inside the top part.....which makes things easier when we want to change anythiing....only a small power socket was added to the bottom plate

Then we continued with some smaller parts the knob for the poti and a longer arm for the servo...the potiknob has to be cutted to a smaller diameter so that it fits inside our top pyramid.....and the servo arm has to be modified so that it hit the right spot on the display....

After that we routed all the cables and connected the LEDs so that we could make a small test if everything work as it should....

After seeing that everything works....we mounted the projections screen and the last side panel so that the upper part is now closed....
The bottom plate can be attached to the upper part with a few screws so that everything will still be accessible....

and last but not least we made a few videos of our holocron in action.....but don´t expect too much...because the quality of the video isn´t the best ....thats caused by the camera which had a hard job to focus on the right spot inside the holocron additionally a few problems were caused by the reflections inside....but i think you can get an impression how it looks in reality

and here is a second video with a few improvements...
