Hello All, I need a build a coding development machine: multi-threaded, loads of ram, no gaming. While the "Core i7 2600K Unlocked Sandy Bridge Quad Core Processor" is certainly impressive and has a great price... I just feel that four cores in 2011 is too little. Hence, does anyone know when/if the Intel is going to update/refresh/release a new size core processor? £700 is too much to pay given Sandy Bridges performance. Thanks, Guy
while you might think 4 cores isnt enough for 2011 the vast majority of software isnt multi-core friendly and even those that are dont make real use of 4 cores never mind anything more. unless you have specific need for lots of cores from a specialist application then its a waste at the moment
8 thread not enough? LGA1155 won't have more than four cores. As stated above LGA2011 will feature 6 and 8 core CPUs (just like LGA1366 Xeons now).
I have seen very early roadmaps that put LGA2011 CPUs at $400+, not to mention the cost of motherboards (expensive new socket, four DIMMs, new layout, new power design, niche appeal + limited sales) Remember 'mainstream' is still dual-core and performance is quad. 22nm Ivy Bridge this time next year might bring 6-cores to 1155, but you might also need a new mobo..
Short Answer: Not Really Long Answer: I am a software developer, we target the Microsoft platform which most do. Typically, the machine will run SQL Server 2008 (thread scalable), IIS (thread efficient), Visual Studio 210 (a memory hog, thread scalable). Typically, all this software runs concurrently and will max out all available resources (memory, threads and disk). I was originally looking at a dual-Xeon rig, but Sandy Bridge has blown out the cost-benefit. Best to get a iCore7 then upgrade at the end of the year.
You want Xeons then, or, at least an i7-970 with 24GB of memory. As long as you get 1.5V DDR3 it should be transferable. http://ark.intel.com/MySearch.aspx?...Xeon® Processor&CoreCountMin=8&CoreCountMax=8 8 core/16 thread Xeon $2500 or, 12 core AMD Opteron 6174 http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2010/03/31/amd-opteron-6174-vs-intel-xeon-x5650-review/1 $1300: 24 cores for the price of one Xeon! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819105272 Dual G34 Tyan board will be ~£225 to £400 too. Add in an OCZ Revo drive maybe..
so the new LGA2011 is to replace the 980X as apposed to the 950 series in price range? Just considering when its worth upgrading - can get a 2600k but was gonna wait to see what the LGA2011 is like - dont have a stupidly high budget though
yeah - I was meaning do you think the new hexcores on LGA2011 will be cheaper than the current range My next upgrade will be in the next year - and was wondering if its worth the wait - kinda like op I guess
